Robe, Ring, Sandals

The son has an apology prepared and gets two thirds of the way through it. What the father calls for is not a bath, a bed or a meal — it is three restorations of standing, handed to a boy who smells of pigs.

So he got up and went to his father. But while he was still in the distance, his father saw him and was filled with compassion. He ran and embraced him and kissed him. The son declared, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son.’ But the father said to his servants, ‘Quick! Bring the best robe and put it on him. Put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet.’

Jesus is telling this to religious leaders who are scandalised that He eats with the wrong people. The father interrupts the apology.

The Apology He Never Finished

The son has a speech prepared. He rehearsed it on the road.

Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son. Make me like one of your hired servants.

He gets two thirds of the way through it.

He says the confession. He says the disqualification. And then, before he can get to the proposal — the part where he negotiates himself a reduced position in the household — his father is already talking to the servants.

Quick. Bring the best robe. Put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet.

Notice what the father does not do. He does not deny the confession. He does not say it was nothing, or that the money did not matter, or that the years were fine. The son's account of what he did is allowed to stand.

What gets interrupted is the son's account of what he now is.

The boy has come home with a plan to be a servant, which is a reasonable plan and an honest one. It is also a smaller life than the one being handed back to him, and his father will not let him take it.

Two pairs, both of them absolute. Not improved. Not partially recovered. Dead and alive, lost and found.

Three Gifts, None Of Them Comforts

Look at what the father actually calls for, because none of it is what you would give a tired traveller.

He does not order a bath, a bed, or a meal first. Those come later. The first three things out of his mouth are a robe, a ring, and sandals, and each of them is a restoration of standing rather than a relief of discomfort.

The best robe is the household's finest garment. In a culture where clothing announced position before anyone spoke, putting it on a boy who has been feeding pigs is a public statement about where he belongs.

The ring is authority. A signet ring seals documents. It means the wearer can act on behalf of the house, commit its resources, sign in its name. You do not hand that to a hired servant.

The sandals matter for a reason that is easy to miss. Servants and slaves in that household went barefoot. Sons wore shoes. The father is not making his son comfortable. He is putting the mark of a free man on his feet.

So the gifts are not consolation. They are reinstatement.

And this is where the week turns a corner. Being found is one thing. Being restored to function is another, and it is the harder, slower, less photogenic half of the story.

There is a fourth thing, and it is the one the son could not have asked for.

The father runs.

In that culture an elderly landowner did not run. Running required gathering up a long robe, which meant exposing the legs, which meant a loss of dignity in front of the whole village. The father takes that loss in public, on a road, before a word of the apology has been spoken.

And he does it while the son is still in the distance. Not when the boy arrives. Not after hearing the speech and judging it sincere. While he is still far off, and unaware he has been seen.

Which is the same order of events we have been tracing all week. The searching happens before the found party knows about it. The running starts before the apology.

Being found is one thing. Being restored to function is another, and it is the harder, slower, less photogenic half.

Rescue Is Not Rehabilitation

We tend to collapse two different things into one word.

Rescue is the moment. Somebody reaches you, pulls you out, gets you to safety. It is dramatic, it is fast, and it makes a good story because it has a shape — before, crisis, after.

Rehabilitation is what happens next, and it has almost no shape at all. It is repetitive. It is largely invisible. Most of it consists of doing an unremarkable thing again on a day when it did not work yesterday.

Scripture keeps both and does not pretend they are the same.

The Hebrew word for healing carries this in its range. Rapha is used of a person made well, and it is also used of a ruined altar being repaired, of undrinkable water made drinkable, of a nation's wound being closed. In its intensive form it means thorough repair — the sort that takes time and materials and somebody's attention over a stretch.

Isaiah's vision of a restored world runs the same way. Beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, a garment of praise for a spirit of heaviness. Every one of those is an exchange rather than a rescue. Somebody is being re-dressed and re-supplied for a life that continues.

And the old ruins get rebuilt. Not removed. Rebuilt.

There is a practical consequence, and it changes how people read their own lives.

If rescue and repair are the same event, then a slow recovery means the rescue did not take. Every hard week becomes evidence against the thing you were told happened to you.

If they are two different things, a hard week is just a hard week inside a work that is still going on.

Isaiah's list is worth reading with that in mind. Beauty for ashes and a garment of praise for a spirit of despair are exchanges, not extractions. Nobody is being removed from their circumstances. They are being re-clothed inside them, and then called oaks — a slow-growing tree, which is not an accident of imagery.

The Spirit of the Lord GOD is on Me, because the LORD has anointed Me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent Me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives and freedom to the prisoners, to proclaim the year of the LORD’s favor and the day of our God’s vengeance, to comfort all who mourn, to console the mourners in Zion— to give them a crown of beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, and a garment of praise for a spirit of despair. So they will be called oaks of righteousness, the planting of the LORD, that He may be glorified.

Isaiah 61:1-3 (BSB)

Jesus reads the opening of this passage aloud in a synagogue in Nazareth and says it has been fulfilled in their hearing. The exchanges are all garments and oils — things you put on a person who is going to keep living.

Then and Now

ANCIENT TRUTH

Ancient healing stories tend to end at the moment of cure. The blind see, the lame walk, the crowd is amazed, the scene closes. What happened on the following Tuesday was not considered narratable.

But the middle is where most people actually live, and Scripture is less squeamish about it than we are. The chapter this week is built on ends with its central character still lame.

MODERN APPLICATION

We have inherited that editing. Testimony is expected to have a shape — I was like this, then God did something, now I am like that. Anyone whose story stalls in the middle learns quickly that it is not the kind of story people want at the front of a room.

NEW TESTAMENT ECHO

Even Paul, who could have written the cleanest testimony in history, asked three times for a thorn to be removed and was told no. He got an answer about sufficiency instead of an answer about removal.

The Panel Is Not Thrown Away

Athanasius, writing in the fourth century about why God became human, reaches for a picture from a workshop.

Suppose a portrait has been painted on a panel of wood, and then the likeness is spoiled — dirtied, defaced, ruined beyond what cleaning will fix. What happens next?

You do not throw away the wood.

The panel is still good. The material is not the problem. What is required is that the person the portrait was of comes back and sits again, so the likeness can be redone on the same board.

That is his argument for the incarnation, and it is also the shape of rehabilitation. The material is not written off. The original is not replaced with a different, better original. The same wood carries the restored image, and the restoration requires the presence of the one it is an image of.

C. S. Lewis, sixteen centuries later, put the same idea in a house.

"I find I must borrow yet another parable from George MacDonald. Imagine yourself as a living house. God comes in to rebuild that house. At first, perhaps, you can understand what He is doing. He is getting the drains right and stopping the leaks in the roof and so on: you knew that those jobs needed doing and so you are not surprised. But presently he starts knocking the house about in a way that hurts abominably and does not seem to make sense."

And then the reason for the demolition.

"The explanation is that He is building quite a different house from the one you thought of. You thought you were going to be made into a decent little cottage: but He is building a palace. He intends to come and live in it Himself."

Notice what both pictures have in common. In neither one does the ruined thing get discarded and replaced. The panel is reused. The house is rebuilt, not demolished and rebuilt elsewhere.

And both admit the process is worse than the reader expected.

Many Weeks Of Apparently Unprofitable Labour

Laura Bridgman was two years old when scarlet fever took her sight, her hearing, and almost all her sense of smell and taste.

Dr Samuel Gridley Howe, who later taught her, described her condition without softening it. “The darkness and the silence of the tomb were around her.” Her own family, he wrote, were to her but forms of matter which resisted her touch — no different from the furniture except in warmth.

Howard heard about the child, travelled to Hanover in New Hampshire to see her, and on 4 October 1837 her parents brought her to Boston.

Then came the part that was not a rescue.

He pasted labels in raised letters onto the objects themselves — spoon, key, book — and taught her to match label to object. And he was scrupulously honest in his report about what that was worth. The success, he wrote, was about as great as teaching a very knowing dog a variety of tricks. She was imitating, not understanding.

Then he records the cost of the next stage in one clause. “Many weeks of apparently unprofitable labour were passed.”

Weeks. Apparently unprofitable. Written by the man doing the labouring, in an annual report, about his own work.

And then it happened.

“The truth began to flash upon her: her intellect began to work…”

She had understood that a sign could carry a thing from her mind into somebody else’s. Howe finishes the sentence.

“…and at once her countenance lighted up with a human expression.”

Years later her mother came to visit. Laura did not know her.

She knew her when her mother kissed her.

The breakthrough is one sentence. The weeks of apparently unprofitable labour that made it possible are also one sentence, and they are the part that actually describes most people’s healing.

Who Was Doing The Work, And Why It Matters

Two things have to be said about that account. The line about the knowing dog is Howe’s confession about his own method, not a description of Laura. He is admitting that what he had achieved so far was mechanical, and that mechanical was not enough. Turned around and applied to her, the sentence becomes a slur. It was never that. And Howe himself is not a clean hero. His reports are Victorian and at points condescending. He writes about her temperament and her ancestry in the language of the phrenology of his day. Laura was to some extent a demonstration piece as well as a pupil, and his interest in her cooled as she grew religiously independent of him. That is worth keeping rather than editing out. Human rehabilitation is partial, slow, and mixed with the helper’s own motives. It is done by people who are themselves unfinished. Which is exactly why the week does not rest there. The father in the parable is not a better version of Dr Howe. He is running toward someone while they are still in the distance, and interrupting an apology he had every right to hear out in full.

Today’s is memory work. One short verse, using a technique that takes about four minutes and actually holds.

Slower Than The Rescue

Here is the honest shape of this week, and today is where it has to be said plainly.

The search is decisive. The reconciliation is finished. The rescue happens, and it happens from God's side, and it does not wait for us to be ready.

The repair takes longer.

That is not a failure of the rescue. It is what repair is. A rebuilt house is occupied while the work continues. A restored panel is worked on over weeks. A boy handed a robe and a ring still has to learn to live in a house he ran out on. There is a brother in the field who is furious about all of it. And Jesus ends the parable without telling us whether that brother ever came in.

The story is deliberately unfinished. The younger son is restored and the older son is still standing outside, and the last thing the father says is addressed to him.

Tomorrow we go to a table where a man is seated as one of the king's sons, and the chapter's final clause tells us he was still lame in both his feet. That sentence has been waiting all week.

Today's work is only to stop reading slowness as evidence that nothing happened.

The panel is not thrown away. The house is not condemned. And many weeks of apparently unprofitable labour is what the record of a real healing actually looks like from inside.

Prayer

Father, I have been reading my slowness as a verdict. I assumed that because nothing dramatic has happened lately, nothing is happening. You repair altars and rebuild ruins and work on the same panel for as long as it takes. Give me the patience to be a long piece of work. And where I have negotiated myself down to a servant’s room, come and interrupt me before I finish the speech. Amen.
