The Night the King Could Not Sleep

By the time we reach Esther 4, the trap has shut. Haman, the king’s second-in-command, has bought a royal decree to destroy every Jew in the empire on a single appointed day. Mordecai sits in sackcloth at the gate. And the only person inside the palace who might intervene is a young queen who has kept her people a secret – and who has not been summoned to the king in thirty days. To approach him uninvited is a capital crime.

Mordecai’s message to her is blunt. Do not imagine your palace will save you. If you stay silent, rescue will come from somewhere else, but you will not be part of it. And then the line the whole book is remembered for: “And who knows if perhaps you have come to the kingdom for such a time as this?”

Notice how carefully that is said. Mordecai does not claim to read the mind of God. He says “who knows.” He says “perhaps.” He is certain deliverance will come – relief and deliverance for the Jews will arise from another place – but he holds the exact mechanism with open hands. That is what faith sounds like inside a book where God is never named: total confidence that He acts, total humility about how. Esther answers by calling a three-day fast and walking toward the throne with a sentence that has steadied frightened believers for twenty-five centuries: “If I perish, I perish.”

A friend of mine spent four years on a kidney transplant list and had stopped expecting the call. Then one ordinary Tuesday her phone rang at 5:40 in the morning – a stranger an hour away had died in an accident, and the match was almost perfect. What undid her, she told me later, was not the surgery. It was the timing. If that man had left his house ninety seconds earlier or later, she said, I would not be here.

She does not pretend to know why a stranger died so she could live. What she will say is this: “I cannot prove God did it. But I cannot make myself believe it was nothing.”

That is exactly the posture Esther asks of us. The book hands you no voice from heaven, no parted sea, no fire on a mountain. It hands you a sleepless night, a chronicle opened to the right page, a powerful man arriving in the courtyard at the precise wrong moment for himself. It refuses to draw the arrow for you. It lays the coincidences down, one after another, until honesty has to choose: nothing, or Someone.

A Jewish orphan raised by her cousin Mordecai among the exiles in Susa, made queen of Persia without the king knowing she was a Jew. When Haman’s decree threatened her people, she fasted three days, entered the king’s presence uninvited at the risk of her life, and exposed the plot – turning a sentence of annihilation into deliverance.
