The breath returns to the Shepherd

For four days we have walked with the Teacher through a hard honesty most sermons skip. He looked at work and called it wind. He looked at pleasure, wisdom, wealth, and the long indifferent turning of the sun and the rivers, and over all of it he wrote one word: hevel. Breath. Everything is breath.

It would be easy to read Ecclesiastes as the diary of a depressed king and close the cover gently. But Day 5 is where the book turns its hand over and shows what it was holding all along. Qoheleth was never trying to talk us out of living. He was burning off every cheap thing we lean on so that what cannot be shaken is left standing.

Notice the line that sits in the middle of the book like a hinge: “He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the hearts of men, yet they cannot fathom the work that God has done from beginning to end” (3:11). There is the whole ache in one sentence. God put eternity inside us – a hunger no season under the sun can fill – and then did not hand us the map to the whole picture. We are creatures built for forever, living inside a vapor, and that gap is exactly where the restlessness comes from.

A friend of mine spent thirty years building a company. He told me once, near the end of that stretch, about the night he finally hit the number he had chased since he was twenty-five. He poured a drink, stood at the window of an office he had paid for outright, and waited for the feeling. It did not come. “I kept thinking,” he said, “there would be a moment. A door that opened. Instead it was just Tuesday, and the city was the same, and I was the same, and the number was just a number on a screen.”

He was not ungrateful. He loved his work and he was good at it. That was what unsettled him. He had done everything right by the world’s math and arrived at the exact place Qoheleth describes – a man who has gained much under the sun, holding the air.

What saved him from despair was small and strange. He started, almost by accident, eating dinner slowly with his wife again. Reading something old at night. Showing up early to a quiet church on Sundays not to be seen but to sit. He was not chasing the number anymore. He was learning, late, to receive the day as a gift instead of conquering it as a project. “I spent thirty years trying to hold my breath,” he said. “Turns out you’re supposed to just breathe.”

Qoheleth – the Teacher, Preacher, or Gatherer – is the voice of Ecclesiastes, traditionally associated with Solomon, the son of David who reigned in Jerusalem with unmatched wisdom, wealth, and freedom to test every pleasure life could offer. He conducted the most thorough experiment in human satisfaction ever recorded and reported the result without flinching: under the sun, everything is breath. Yet he does not end in cynicism. He gathers his words, drives them home like nails, and points to a single Shepherd and to the God to whom every breath returns.
