The weight eternity leaves in you

Yesterday the Teacher took us to the floor of the search – the place where wisdom, pleasure, work, and wealth had all been weighed and all come back vapor. Today he hands us the question that survives the search: now what? If everything under the sun is breath, how does a person actually get up tomorrow and live?

Start with the line that names the ache: ‘the eye is not satisfied with seeing, nor the ear content with hearing’ (1:8). The Teacher is not scolding desire. He is describing it. You have noticed this in yourself. The promotion satisfies for a week. The screen scrolls and the thumb keeps going. The vacation ends and the wanting does not. The eye is built to keep looking, and nothing it can see under the sun ever tells it to stop.

For most of human history people called this a flaw and tried to kill the wanting. The Teacher does something braver. He sets the restless eye beside one short clause in chapter 3 and lets the clause explain it: God ‘has also set eternity in the hearts of men, yet they cannot fathom the work that God has done from beginning to end’ (3:11). The eye is never satisfied with what is under the sun because the heart was made for something above it. The ache is not malfunction. It is homesickness for a country the eye has never seen.

A friend told me about his father, who spent thirty years building a list. Not on paper – in his chest. Make partner. Pay off the house. Get the daughter through college. See the lake cabin finished. He was not a greedy man; the list was decent, the kind a good father carries. He treated each line like a door: once he got through it, he was sure, the wanting would finally lie down.

He finished the list at sixty-two. My friend remembers sitting with him on the dock of the finished cabin, everything paid for, everyone safe, the water flat and gold in the evening. His father was quiet a long time and then said, almost embarrassed, ‘I thought I’d feel arrived.’ He had crossed off every line and the eye kept looking past the lake.

That is not a story about a failure. It is a story about a man who did everything right and still felt the exact thing the Teacher felt three thousand years earlier. The list was good. It simply was not big enough to hold a heart that God had made for eternity. The dock was the floor of the search – and, though his father did not have words for it yet, it was the beginning of the right question.

Traditionally identified with Solomon, the Teacher writes as a king with the wealth, wisdom, and freedom to test every claim about what makes a life full. He chased pleasure, building, learning, and labor to their limits and reported back with unsettling honesty: under the sun, it is all hevel – vapor. His title comes from the Hebrew root qahal, ‘to gather’ or ‘assemble’; he is one who gathers an assembly to hear the truth no one wants to say out loud.
