Eternity in a Restless Heart

Ecclesiastes opens like a door slamming. “Futility of futilities,” the Teacher says – hevel, vapor, breath you can see in the cold and never hold. He has the resources to test the question to its floor, and he does. Pleasure, building projects, gardens, wealth, music, wisdom, work. He withholds nothing his eyes desire. And every road dead-ends in the same word: vapor, a chasing after the wind.

Notice the phrase he uses for the arena of his search: under the sun. It appears again and again, almost a refrain. Everything he weighs, he weighs under the sun – inside the closed system of a world where generations come and go, the sun rises and sets and hurries back, the rivers run to a sea that is never full. Round and round, nothing new. Within that circle, he is right. Take the most beautiful things in life – work, family, achievement, even wisdom – and seal them off under the sun, with no horizon above it, and they really do thin out into vapor in your hand.

This is Day 3, the turn. For two days the question has been building: if even the wisest, richest life ends in ‘futility,’ what is the point of any of it? The Teacher does not answer by denying the emptiness. He answers by widening the frame.

A friend told me about the night he made partner. He had wanted it for eleven years. He had missed his daughter’s recitals for it, eaten dinner at his desk for it, learned to sleep four hours for it. The email came at 9:40 p.m. He read it twice. He waited for the feeling he had been promising himself the whole decade.

It did not come. He sat in the blue light of the laptop in a quiet house and felt, of all things, the wind. Not grief exactly. Just the strange flatness of arriving somewhere you spent years climbing toward and finding the view is smaller than the photograph.

He is not a religious man, or he wasn’t then. But he said something that night that the Teacher could have written three thousand years ago: “I keep getting the thing, and the thing keeps not being the thing.” He had a heart built for a horizon, and he kept trying to satisfy it with the next rung, which is to say, under the sun.

The voice of Ecclesiastes, traditionally connected to Solomon – ‘the son of David, king in Jerusalem.’ He is the man with the means to test life’s promises all the way to the bottom: wisdom, wealth, pleasure, work, building. His honesty is the gift of the book. He will not pretend the vapor is gold. But he is also the one who names the deeper thing under the emptiness – the eternity God set in the human heart – and who ends not in despair but in a summons to remember the Creator.
