When trust means waiting in the dark

By the time you reach this stretch of the Psalter you have heard the trust psalms make their great claims. Psalm 121 promises a keeper who never sleeps. Psalm 139 says there is no corner of the cosmos, not the heights or Sheol or the farthest sea, where God’s hand cannot reach you. Psalm 27 calls the LORD light and salvation and asks, almost defiantly, whom shall I fear? These are mountaintop sentences.

But read the same psalms a second time and notice what they do with their feet. Psalm 27 ends not on the summit but on a command repeated through clenched teeth: wait for the LORD, wait for the LORD. Psalm 130 cries out of the depths and then does the hardest thing a drowning person can do — it stops thrashing and waits, my soul waits for the Lord more than watchmen wait for the morning. Even Psalm 90, gazing back over a thousand generations, asks God to teach us to number our days. The trust is real. So is the not-yet.

This is the application the trust psalms keep pressing, and it is harder than the claims. Anyone can sing that God is light when the room is bright. The psalmist sings it while still standing in the dark, with the morning not yet up, his only proof a rope he cannot see the far end of. That is what biblical trust mostly is: not the rescue, but the waiting that comes before it, held steady toward a God who has not yet shown His hand.

A friend of mine spent two years working overnight security at a hospital. The job, he said, was almost entirely waiting. Long corridors, the hum of a vending machine, the clock crawling. He told me the thing nobody warns you about is how the dark plays with time. At three in the morning a quiet shift feels like it will never end, and you start to wonder if the morning is actually coming or if you have simply been forgotten on the wrong side of the night.

What got him through, he said, was a habit. Around four he would walk to the east-facing windows on the fifth floor and just stand there. Nothing was happening yet. The sky was as black as it had been at midnight. But he had stood at that window enough mornings to know the order of things: first a thinning at the bottom of the dark, then gray, then a line of dirty gold over the parking deck. He could not make any of it come faster. He could only put himself where he would see it first.

That is the watchman of Psalm 130. He is not naive about the dark; he is standing in it. He simply knows which way to face. His soul waits for the Lord more than watchmen wait for the morning — and the second time the line is repeated, you can feel him steadying his own legs with it.

Not a named individual but the figure the psalmist becomes: a sentry posted through the night, whose entire job is to stay awake, keep facing east, and be the first to announce the dawn. He has no power to summon the sun. His only certainty is that the morning has never once failed to come, and his only task is to wait for it without leaving his post. The psalmist says his soul waits like this — and then, as if to brace himself, says it again.
