The Wisdom That Was There First

Read Proverbs straight through and you notice it is relentless about one purchase. Get wisdom. Get understanding. Buy the truth and do not sell it. Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding (Proverbs 3:5). It hands you proverb after proverb the way a parent hands a child rules for crossing the street: short, practical, life-or-death. A good name is worth more than great riches (22:1). Pride goes before destruction (16:18). Train up a child in the way he should go (22:6). The plans are yours, but the LORD determines your steps (16:9).

For most of the book, wisdom feels like a skill you acquire – good judgment, a steady tongue, the discipline to fear the LORD and turn from evil. It is the kind of thing you would expect from the wisest king Israel ever had, jotting down what he learned about living well under heaven.

Then you reach chapter 8, and something strange happens. Wisdom stops being a quality you collect. Wisdom opens her mouth and speaks. And what she says is not advice. It is autobiography. She says: I was there. Before the mountains were settled, before the springs ran, before there was any dust to make a person from – I was already beside Him.

A friend of mine restores old timber-frame barns, the kind raised before anyone wrote anything down. When he started, he bought every book on joinery he could find – charts of mortise angles, tables of load and span, rules for which way the grain should run. He memorized them. He could quote them. And his first frame still came out wrong, racked and leaning, because the rules in the book assumed something the book never said out loud: that you already understood why a building stands up.

What changed him was not another manual. It was an old carpenter who let him work at his elbow for a season. The man rarely explained. He just built, day after day, and let my friend watch the hands that already knew. The rules finally made sense not when he read them better, but when he stood beside someone for whom the rules were simply how he saw.

Proverbs is full of rules. Trust, don’t lean, fear the LORD, weigh your motives, guard your name. But chapter 8 quietly tells you where the rules come from. They are not the wisdom. They are the visible edge of a Person who was a skilled craftsman at God’s side when the foundations of the earth were marked out – and who would rather have you at His elbow than hand you another list.

In Proverbs, Wisdom is given a voice and a story. She calls out in the streets, sets her table, and in chapter 8 tells of standing beside God before the world was made – the skilled craftsman through whom the foundations of the earth were marked out, the Father’s daily delight, already rejoicing over the sons of men. Jewish readers honored her as the deepest mark of God on His world. Christians, hearing 1 Corinthians, Colossians, and John, came to see in this figure the eternal Son – the Wisdom of God who later took on flesh.
