The King Climbs the Mountain

Matthew does not begin his Gospel with a miracle or a sermon. He begins with a list of names. “This is the record of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham.” The Greek behind “genealogy” is biblos geneseos – the book of the genesis – the same word that titles the first book of the Bible. Matthew is telling us, before he tells us anything else, that the story of Jesus is not a fresh start unconnected to what came before. It is the long story of Israel finally arriving somewhere.

He orders the names into three sets of fourteen: Abraham to David, David to the exile, the exile to the Christ. The pattern is deliberate, almost architectural. Matthew is building a foundation under your feet before he lets you meet the King, the way a builder lays footings before raising a wall. By the time Jesus is named, you already know He is the answer to a promise made to Abraham and a throne promised to David.

Then comes the name itself. The angel tells Joseph to call the child Jesus, “because He will save His people from their sins” – and Matthew adds that all of this fulfills the prophet: “they will call Him Immanuel (which means, God with us)” (Matthew 1:21-23). Save and with us: those two words frame everything that follows. John the Baptist appears in the wilderness with the announcement “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is near” (3:2), the heavens tear open at the Jordan, and a voice names Jesus “My beloved Son” (3:17). Tested in the desert and refusing every shortcut, Jesus walks out into Galilee and takes up John’s exact words: “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is near” (4:17). The herald has done his work. Now the King speaks for Himself, and He climbs a mountain to do it.

A builder I know spent thirty years putting up houses on a stretch of coast that takes a hard storm most autumns. New owners always wanted to talk about the kitchen, the view, the wide back porch. He wanted to talk about the footings – the part nobody photographs, poured deep into rock or driven down to bedrock where the sand gives way.

One October a storm came in worse than the forecast, and afterward he drove the coast road slowly, looking. The houses with the showy porches and the shallow foundations had shifted, cracked, some of them slid. The plain ones he’d anchored down were sitting exactly where he left them. He told me he could have walked the road blindfolded and known which was which, because he remembered what was under each one.

When Jesus ends His sermon, He does not end with a feeling. He ends with two builders and one storm (Matthew 7:24-27). The houses look the same in fair weather. The difference is buried, out of sight, in what each man built down into – and it only shows when the rain falls, the torrents rage, and the winds beat against the wall.

Matthew presents Jesus as the long-promised King in whom Israel’s whole story arrives. Descended from Abraham and David, named Jesus because ‘He will save His people from their sins,’ and called Immanuel, ‘God with us,’ He is announced by John, declared the beloved Son at His baptism, and tested in the wilderness. Then He ascends a mountain – as Moses once climbed Sinai – and gives the kingdom’s charter, not with borrowed authority but with His own: ‘But I say to you.’ He does not abolish the Law and the Prophets; He fulfills them (Matthew 5:17).
