What kind of man scatters seed like this?

Read Matthew 8 through 13 in one sitting and you feel the ground tilt halfway through. The first half is almost relentless in its power. A leper kneels and is made clean by a touch. A centurion’s servant is healed from a distance, by a word. A storm on the Sea of Galilee is silenced mid-fury, and the soaked, terrified men in the boat ask the question the whole section is built to provoke: “What kind of man is this? Even the winds and the sea obey Him!” (Matthew 8:27). Demons flee. A paralytic walks. A dead girl sits up. Jesus moves through the towns “teaching in their synagogues, preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every disease and sickness” (Matthew 9:35). If you only had chapters 8 and 9, you would expect the kingdom to arrive the way an army arrives – visible, irresistible, the new order plain on every face.

Then the section turns. The crowds thin into argument. The religious leaders decide His power comes from the wrong source. John the Baptist, in prison, sends to ask whether Jesus is even the One they were waiting for. By chapter 13 Jesus sits down by the lake, faces a crowd, and instead of another miracle He starts telling stories about farming. “A farmer went out to sow his seed.” After all that power, the King’s chosen way of explaining His reign is a man walking a field, flinging seed, most of which seems to fail.

A pastor I know spent thirty years in a small town in the Midwest. He told me once, without bitterness, that he could count on one hand the people he was certain he had reached. He had preached more than a thousand Sundays. He had sat with the dying, buried the old, married the young, prayed over more crises than he could remember. And when he tried to add it all up, the visible fruit looked thin against the labor.

Then he said something I have not forgotten. He said the parable of the sower was the only thing that kept him sane. “I used to think my job was to make the seed grow,” he said. “It isn’t. My job is to keep sowing. Some falls on the path. Some on the rocks. I don’t always get to see the soil. The farmer in the story doesn’t stand over each seed willing it to take. He scatters, and he trusts the ground he can’t control.”

He was describing a kingdom that does not look like a kingdom. No throne in the town square. Just a man, year after year, throwing seed into ground he could not see into – and somewhere, unseen, a thirtyfold, a sixtyfold, a hundredfold.

In Matthew 8-13 Jesus shows Himself as the One with authority over sickness, demons, storm, and death – the King the prophets promised. Yet when He explains how His reign actually comes, He does not describe a throne or an army. He describes a farmer scattering seed. He is the King who plants rather than conquers, who would rather grow a willing harvest in human hearts than compel obedience by force.
