Matthew front-loads the name before the teaching. The One who climbs the mountain to describe an impossible righteousness is the same One named, before birth, to save His people from their sins. Hold those together and the whole Sermon changes color.
Matthew opens not with a star or a stable but with a list of names — Abraham, David, fourteen generations and fourteen more — as if to say: this story has been a long time coming. Then an angel tells Joseph what to call the child: “you are to give Him the name Jesus, because He will save His people from their sins” (Matthew 1:21). Before the baby can speak, His name is a sentence about what He will do. The other name Matthew gives Him is Immanuel, “God with us” (1:23). A King is named twice over: He saves, and He is God-near.
The King grows up, and the first word He preaches is the same word John the Baptist had been shouting in the wilderness: “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is near” (4:17). Near. Not built by Rome, not won by a sword, not somewhere over the horizon — near, the way a person standing beside you is near. Matthew tells us Jesus went through Galilee “teaching in their synagogues, preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every disease and sickness” (4:23). The kingdom arrives the way light arrives in a room: suddenly the sick are well and the crowds are following a carpenter up a hillside to hear Him talk.
And then He sits down — the posture a rabbi took to teach with authority — and gives the kingdom its constitution. We call it the Sermon on the Mount. It is the longest stretch of Jesus’ teaching Matthew records in one place, and it begins not with a command but with a blessing.
The Entrance Exam With No Questions
A friend of mine spent a year studying for a single licensing exam — flash cards on the bathroom mirror, practice tests at 5 a.m., the whole house arranged around the day he would finally be measured. He passed. And the strange thing he told me afterward was how empty the passing felt, because the exam had only ever measured whether he was good enough to be let in.
When people first hear the Sermon on the Mount, they often hear it as that kind of exam. Be perfect. Don’t even be angry. Don’t even look with lust. Love your enemies. It sounds like the hardest entrance test ever written, and most of us fail it by breakfast. If that is what the Sermon is, the only honest response is despair.
But look at how Jesus opens. He does not say, “Blessed are the disciplined, the impressive, the morally elite.” He says, “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven” (Matthew 5:3). The first people He calls blessed are the ones who have come to the exam with nothing to write. The kingdom does not begin with a passing grade. It begins with empty hands held open.
The Sermon is not the entrance exam for the kingdom. It is the King describing the kind of life that grows inside people He has already welcomed empty-handed.
Be Perfect — and Here Is Your Daily Bread
Stand at the center of the Sermon and two lines pull against each other. “Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect” (Matthew 5:48). And, a few breaths later, “Give us this day our daily bread” (6:11). One line sets a ceiling no human has ever touched. The other puts a beggar’s request in our mouths: feed me, today, like a child who cannot stock the pantry. That tension is the genius of the kingdom, not a contradiction in it. Jesus raises the standard to its full height — not adultery only but the lustful look, not murder only but the contemptuous word — until no one can imagine climbing it. And in the same sermon He teaches us to pray for bread we cannot grow and forgiveness we cannot earn, and He says the Father already “knows that you need them” (6:32). The righteousness the King requires turns out to be the righteousness He commands us to seek and receive: “Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be added unto you” (6:33). Added. Not achieved. Handed over. This is why the Sermon does not crush the poor in spirit — it is addressed to them. The ceiling of 5:48 and the open palm of 6:11 meet in one place: a King who demands perfect righteousness and then, on a different hill, supplies it. He came not to tear down the Law but to fill it full (5:17), and what He fills full of His own obedience He gives away as daily bread to people who arrive with nothing.
HISTORICAL CONTEXT
Matthew writes for a community steeped in the Hebrew Scriptures, which is why he keeps showing Jesus ‘fulfilling’ what the prophets spoke. To a first-century ear, a new teacher who set Himself above Moses would be a scandal — yet Jesus insists He has not come to abolish Moses but to bring the Law to the fullness it was always pointing toward. He teaches ‘as one who had authority, and not as their scribes’ (Matthew 7:29): the scribes cited earlier authorities; Jesus speaks as the authority.
Matthew arranges Jesus’ teaching into five great discourses, and many scholars have noticed the echo of the five books of Moses. The Sermon on the Mount is the first of the five. Where Moses went up the mountain to receive the Law, Jesus goes up the mountain to give it — quietly claiming a place the original audience reserved for God alone.
BRIDGE TO CHRIST
ANCIENT TRUTH
Jesus opens the kingdom by blessing the poor in spirit, raises the Law to a height no one can climb, and then teaches those same people to ask the Father for daily bread, forgiveness, and rescue — gifts, not wages.
Matthew 1-7 is the dawn of a single arc that runs through the whole Gospel: a King is named to save His people from their sins, announces that the kingdom is near, and describes the righteousness of that kingdom — a righteousness so total that only He can supply it. The Sermon sets the standard; the cross pays it; the resurrection vindicates the King who did both.
MODERN APPLICATION
We are fluent in the entrance-exam version of faith: be good enough, try harder, clean yourself up before you approach. The Sermon refuses that script. It tells the anxious and the failing to stop striving after what the Gentiles strive after, and instead to seek first the kingdom — to come empty-handed to a Father who already knows what they need before they ask.
NEW TESTAMENT ECHO
What the Sermon requires, Christ became. “God made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, so that in Him we might become the righteousness of God” (2 Corinthians 5:21). The ‘be perfect’ of Matthew 5:48 is not a demand left hanging over us; it is met in the One who fulfilled all righteousness and gives it away.

Fill full in me the Law I keep tearing down. And teach me to seek first Your kingdom, trusting that my Father already knows what I need. Amen.

The King Who Fulfills the Law

The promised Son of David and Son of Abraham, named before His birth to ‘save His people from their sins’ (Matthew 1:21) and called Immanuel, ‘God with us’ (1:23). The same King who sets the standard impossibly high is the One who came to meet it for us. We do not climb the Sermon to reach Him; we receive His fulfilled righteousness as daily bread and let Him build our house on the rock.
