The word that names this whole project sits at the center of Luke’s Gospel – and Luke insists it be carried first to the people the world counts last.

In Luke 4:18 Jesus reads Isaiah’s promise to ‘preach good news to the poor’ and uses this very verb. Luke loves it: he uses the euangel- family far more than Matthew or Mark, and he keeps aiming it at the people who were used to receiving bad news – the poor, the foreign, the female, the sick, the shamed. The good message is not generic. It has an address.

A Manifesto Sung Before a Single Miracle

Luke gives you the thesis before the evidence. Mary’s song is the table of contents for the whole Gospel: God lifts the lowly, and the good news has an address.

Luke opens with paperwork. He tells Theophilus he has ‘carefully investigated everything from the beginning’ so that his reader ‘may know the certainty of the things you have been taught’ (Luke 1:3-4). This is a careful man writing a careful account. So it is striking that before Luke narrates one healing, one parable, one walk on water, he stops the action and lets a pregnant teenager sing.

Mary’s song – the church has called it the Magnificat for centuries, after its first word in Latin – is not soft. It is one of the most political poems in Scripture. She praises a God who ‘has scattered those who are proud,’ who ‘has brought down rulers from their thrones, but has exalted the humble,’ who ‘has filled the hungry with good things, but has sent the rich away empty’ (Luke 1:51-53). Notice the verbs are already in the past tense. Mary sings as though the reversal has already happened, because in her womb it has begun.

This is Luke handing you the key on the first page. Everything in chapters 1 through 12 will be this song acted out. The shepherds, the foreigners, the women, the tax collectors, the sick, the sinful – the people the religious and the powerful had quietly written off – keep walking to the front of Luke’s story and being told they belong there.

The Reading That Started a Riot

There is a particular kind of homecoming where the town wants you to be exactly who you were when you left. Luke 4 is that homecoming. Jesus comes back to Nazareth, the place He grew up, and on the Sabbath He stands to read. He is handed the scroll of Isaiah. He finds the place He is looking for and reads about the Spirit anointing someone ‘to preach good news to the poor,’ to free captives, to give sight to the blind, to release the oppressed, to announce ‘the year of the Lord’s favor’ (Luke 4:18-19).

Then He rolls up the scroll, sits down, and says nine words that change everything: ‘Today this Scripture is fulfilled in your hearing’ (Luke 4:21). The room is electric. But as Jesus keeps speaking, He makes the favor wider than the hometown can stand – reminding them God once fed a foreign widow and healed a foreign general while Israel went without. By the end of the chapter the same neighbors who had admired Him are trying to throw Him off a cliff.

That is the cost of an inclusive God. Good news for the outsider often lands as bad news for whoever assumed they owned the inside.

Jesus takes Mary’s song and makes it His job description – and the trouble starts the moment the favor reaches past the people who expected to have it first.

He Did Not Just Sing the Song. He Became It.

Hold the two scenes side by side and watch them lock together. In Luke 1, Mary sings that God ‘has filled the hungry with good things’ and ‘exalted the humble.’ In Luke 4, Jesus reads that He is anointed ‘to preach good news to the poor.’ The song and the sermon are the same announcement – one in the mouth of the mother, one in the mouth of the Son. And then Luke spends the next eight chapters proving it is not poetry. The proof is relentlessly specific. To shepherds on a hillside the angel says the Savior is born ‘for all the people’ (Luke 2:10-11). At a tax collector’s table Jesus says, ‘It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners’ (Luke 5:31-32). To a woman the room had labeled sinful He says, ‘Your faith has saved you; go in peace’ (Luke 7:50). To a crowd of the destitute He says, ‘Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of God’ (Luke 6:20). This is the heart of Luke, and it is the heart of the word euangelion itself. The good news is not an abstraction for people who already have their lives together. It comes, by design, to the ones who have been sent away empty everywhere else – and in Jesus, the singing becomes a body that eats with them, touches them, and calls them by name.

HISTORICAL CONTEXT

Luke wrote for a largely Gentile readership in the Greco-Roman world, dedicating his work to ‘most excellent Theophilus’ (Luke 1:3), a title suggesting a person of standing. In that world, status was everything: birth, wealth, gender, and ethnicity fixed your place. Luke’s relentless attention to shepherds, women, Samaritans, tax collectors, and the poor would have read as genuinely scandalous – a Savior whose favor ran in exactly the wrong direction.

Luke records more about women, more parables of the lost being found, and more concern for the poor than any other Gospel. The Magnificat (1:46-55) is itself stitched from the song of Hannah (1 Samuel 2) – another lowly woman whose pregnancy God used to reverse the order of things. Luke is telling you, from the first chapter, that this is how God has always worked.

ANCIENT TRUTH

Mary sang of a God who lifts the lowly and fills the hungry, and Jesus made that song His mission – carrying the good news first to the poor, the foreign, the sick, and the shamed.

Mary’s song does not invent this reversal – it inherits it. It echoes Hannah’s song (1 Samuel 2:7-8), where God ‘raises the poor from the dust.’ It runs through the whole prophetic stream that Jesus reads aloud from Isaiah 61. Luke’s Gospel is the place where that long promise stops being a hope sung in worship and starts walking around Galilee with a name.

MODERN APPLICATION

Most of us learn early to sort ourselves and others into who counts and who doesn’t. We can do it with money, with religion, with respectability, even with how put-together we appear on a given Sunday. Luke’s Gospel takes that whole filing system and turns it upside down. The question it presses is not ‘Am I impressive enough for God’s favor?’ but ‘Have I quietly assumed someone else is too far gone for it?’

NEW TESTAMENT ECHO

What Mary sang and Jesus preached, Jesus then embodied to the end. ‘For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost’ (Luke 19:10) is the whole Gospel compressed into a sentence – and the cross is where the One who lifted the lowly took the lowest place Himself, so the sent-away-empty could be filled.

Where in your life do you secretly suspect you are too far gone, too unimpressive, or too late for God’s favor – and what would it mean to hear yourself counted among the ‘humble’ Mary says He has exalted?

Be honest: is there a kind of person you have quietly written off as outside the reach of the good news? What would Luke do with them?
When the favor of God goes to someone you think hasn’t earned it, does that feel like good news or like a threat – and what does your answer reveal?
Mary sang the reversal as already done. Where do you need to start trusting that God has already begun lifting what feels low in your life?

Posture: honest-confession

Father, I have spent a long time trying to climb to where I thought You kept Your favor. Today let me hear Mary’s song the way she meant it – that You lift the lowly, fill the hungry, and have sent good news straight to the people the world sends away. Where I have written anyone off, including myself, undo it. Make me small enough to be exalted by Your hand and not my own. And through Christ, who came to seek and to save the lost, count me among the found. Amen.

A young woman from an obscure Galilean town, engaged but not yet married, with no wealth, status, or platform – exactly the kind of person Luke’s Gospel keeps lifting to the front. She is the first human being in Luke to understand the good news, and she understood it as reversal.

The first person to grasp the Gospel in Luke was not a scholar or a ruler but a powerless young woman – which is, fittingly, the whole point of the song she sang.
