The King Opens His Mouth

Matthew does not open his Gospel with a star or a stable. He opens with a list of names – Abraham fathered Isaac, Isaac fathered Jacob – fourteen generations, then fourteen more, then fourteen more, a slow drumbeat of fathers and sons marching down the centuries toward one birth. It reads like a deed of title. Matthew is establishing a claim: this Jesus belongs to David’s line and Abraham’s promise. He has the right to be called King.

But a king needs more than a bloodline. He needs a word to speak. And so the first seven chapters move with purpose: a name given by an angel, ‘you are to give Him the name Jesus, because He will save His people from their sins’; a prophecy fulfilled, ‘they will call Him Immanuel (which means, God with us)’; a wilderness tested; a kingdom announced – ‘Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is near.’ Then Matthew brings us up a hill. ‘When Jesus saw the crowds, He went up on the mountain and sat down.’

A Jewish reader feels the ground shift here. There was another time a man went up a mountain and God’s word came down to a waiting people. There was thunder on Sinai, and Moses climbing into the cloud, and tablets carried down in his arms. Matthew has been building toward this on purpose. Now the mountain has a different occupant. The One who once spoke from the fire and smoke has come up the slope in a body, and He sits – the posture of a rabbi who has the authority to teach – and He opens His mouth.

A friend told me about the morning her family gathered in a lawyer’s office after her father died. There was a long table, coffee no one drank, and a thick document the attorney read in a flat, careful voice. The will. Every line had been chosen by a man who was no longer in the room, and now those lines decided who got the house, the land, the small things that carried his whole life.

What struck her, she said, was the strangeness of hearing her father’s wishes in a stranger’s mouth. The words were his. The voice was not. She kept wishing he could walk in and say it himself – not so the terms would change, but so she could hear him mean them.

That is the difference Matthew is pressing on. For centuries Israel had the will of God written down and read aloud – the Law and the Prophets, scribes parsing every clause, teachers handing the words along in voices that were not the Author’s. And then, on a hillside in Galilee, the Author walked in and began to read it Himself. ‘You have heard that it was said… but I tell you.’ Not changing the terms. Meaning them, out loud, in His own voice, for the first time in the hearing of men. The crowds could not name what they felt, but Matthew names it for them: they were astonished, ‘because He taught as one who had authority, and not as their scribes.’

Matthew presents Jesus first by His lineage – son of David, son of Abraham – establishing His right to David’s throne. Born to be named Jesus, ‘because He will save His people from their sins,’ and called Immanuel, ‘God with us,’ He announces the kingdom of heaven and then, on a mountain, gives its constitution in the Sermon on the Mount. He claims not to abolish the Law and the Prophets but to fulfill them – to be their completion in His own person.
