Treasure in the field

By Matthew 13 the disciples are puzzled, and they ask the obvious question. The crowds keep coming. The teaching keeps landing as stories about farmers, seeds, weeds, yeast, nets full of fish. Why not just say it plainly? “Why do You speak to the people in parables?”

Jesus answers in a way that unsettles us. The parables, He says, both reveal and conceal. “The knowledge of the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven has been given to you, but not to them.” To one kind of listener the story opens; to another it stays shut, a tale about dirt. He quotes Isaiah: though seeing, they do not see. This is not God playing favorites with information. It is a description of what truth does when it meets a heart that has already decided not to be moved. The story slips past the guard a direct command would have alerted. It waits. It can be carried home and chewed on. It can ambush you a week later, in the dark.

Look at the six chapters this reading covers, and notice the pattern. In Matthew 8 and 9 the kingdom arrives as power you could miss: Jesus reaches out and touches a leper, a thing no clean man would do, and says “I am willing. Be clean.” In chapter 11, the kingdom arrives as an invitation so gentle it sounds like weakness: “Come to Me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” In chapter 12 it arrives as a claim hidden in a Sabbath argument: “something greater than the temple is here.” And in chapter 13 it arrives, finally, as treasure buried in a field where no one would think to look. The same kingdom, the same King, the whole way through — and in every scene it comes disguised as the ordinary, recognized only by those whose eyes have been opened.

There is an old way of buying land in the ancient Near East, and Jesus is counting on His hearers knowing it. A laborer is plowing a field he does not own. His blade catches on something — a jar, a chest, coins gone green with age. Someone, generations back, buried their savings before a war and never came back for them. The law of the day was rough but clear: treasure belonged to whoever owned the ground.

So the man does something that, from the outside, looks like ruin. He covers the treasure back over. He tells no one. He goes home and sells everything he has — the ox, the tools, maybe the house — and with the whole price of his life he buys one unremarkable field. The neighbors shake their heads. He has lost his mind. He has traded everything for dirt.

But he is not grieving. Matthew gives us one word the neighbors cannot see behind: joy. “In his joy he went and sold all he had.” The cost is total and the man is laughing. He is not making a sacrifice. He is making the trade of his life, and he knows exactly what is in that ground.

In Matthew 8-13, Jesus moves through Galilee teaching, healing, and gathering both crowds and opposition. He touches lepers, calms a storm, forgives sins, sends out twelve disciples, and finally sits in a boat and teaches the gathered crowds in a chain of parables about the kingdom of heaven. He is unmistakably powerful and deliberately hidden at once — recognized by His disciples as the Christ, dismissed by His hometown as the carpenter’s son. He is the kingdom He describes, walking ordinary roads.
