It is easy to read Exodus 7 through 11 as a contest of stubbornness – Pharaoh says no, God turns up the pressure, Pharaoh says no again. Read that way, the plagues can feel like an escalating tantrum, a heavenly arm-twist until the human king finally gives in.

But that is not how the book itself explains them. The plagues have a stated purpose, and it is repeated so many times you cannot miss it: “so you may know that there is no one like Me in all the earth” (9:14). “That you may know that I, the LORD, am in the land” (8:22). “By this you will know that I am the LORD” (7:17). These are not pressure tactics. They are revelations. Each one is teaching somebody something true about who God is.

And here is the part that turns the whole passage on its head. The plagues are aimed. Egypt was a land thick with gods. The Nile was worshiped as the god Hapi, source of all life – so the first plague turns the Nile to blood. The frog was sacred to the goddess Heqet – so the land heaves with frogs until they rot in stinking heaps. Ra the sun god, the highest god in Egypt’s sky, the one Pharaoh claimed as his own father – so a darkness that can be felt swallows the sun for three days. The book tells us plainly what is happening: “I will execute judgment against all the gods of Egypt” (12:12). The plagues are God walking down the list of everything Egypt trusted instead of Him, and crossing each one off.

A woman I know spent two years getting out from under a man who controlled her. By the time she left, the danger was not really him anymore. He had moved three states away. The danger was the house itself – the rooms full of objects that still ran her life from the inside.

The phone she could not stop checking. The scale in the bathroom she stepped on every morning before she let herself eat. The closet organized to his taste. The bank app she opened a dozen times a day, certain that money was the thing that would finally make her safe. She was free on paper. She was still a servant in fact, and the masters were small gods she had carried out of the old life and set up quietly in the new one.

Her counselor did not tell her to feel better about herself. She did something stranger. One by one, she made the woman name each thing out loud and say what it had promised her – safety, control, worth, love – and then say plainly what it had actually delivered. The phone promised connection and gave her dread. The scale promised control and gave her hunger. It was slow and it was not gentle. But naming each false promise for what it was is exactly how the chains came off. You cannot leave a god you will not admit you are serving.

The unnamed ruler of Egypt, regarded by his people as a living god and the earthly son of Ra. Across the plague cycle he becomes the great contrast to the LORD: where God reveals Himself to be known and worshiped, Pharaoh hardens himself again and again, even after his own priests confess defeat. He is not a fool brought down by ignorance but a will brought down by refusal – the human heart in close-up, choosing its grip over its freedom.
