The God who could rule by fear instead calls a nation to be priests – a people whose whole existence is to stand near Him and pull others toward Him.

This phrase is spoken at the foot of Sinai before a single law is given. The covenant’s first word about Israel’s purpose is vocation, not regulation: a people set apart to bring the nations near to God. Peter lifts these exact words and hands them to the church (1 Peter 2:9).

Carried Up to a Mountain That Cannot Be Touched

The fence around Sinai is what keeps a rescued people alive in the presence of holiness – a boundary that is mercy, not menace.

One Man Goes Up Where No One Else May

Watch the traffic on the mountain. The people are fenced out on pain of death. Even the priests, God warns, must consecrate themselves or He will break out against them. And in the middle of all this lethal distance, one man climbs. Moses goes up to God. Moses comes down to the people. Up and down he goes – carrying God’s words to the camp, carrying the camp’s answer back to God. He stands in the one place the boundary forbids to everyone else, and he stands there as a go-between. That is the office Sinai cannot do without: a mediator. The holiness is real and the distance is deadly, so someone must bridge it – someone allowed up the mountain who can also stand down in the camp. At Sinai that someone is Moses, and he is enough to relay the words but not enough to close the gap. The fence stays up. The people still tremble. The blood Moses will soon sprinkle on them (Exodus 24:8) holds the covenant together for now, but the mountain is never opened. Here is the center of the whole scene, and the thread that runs straight to the cross. Sinai’s problem is not that God is too holy. It is that we are not holy enough to come near and live. What the chapter cries out for is a mediator who is more than Moses – one who can go all the way up into the fire and bring the whole camp through the line with Him.

Where has your sense of God grown casual – safe, small, easy to talk over – and what would it mean to stand again at the foot of a mountain on fire?

1. Exodus 19 shows grace first (carried on eagles’ wings) and holiness second (the fenced mountain). Which of the two do you most need to recover right now – the nearness or the awe?
2. The people trembled. When was the last time the holiness of God moved you to anything like reverence? What dulled it?
3. If in Christ you have been brought to Mount Zion rather than Sinai, how should that change the way you draw near to God today?

Today, before you speak to God casually, stop and remember the mountain on fire. Read Exodus 19:16-19 slowly, out loud if you can. Then thank Jesus – by name – that He is the reason you may draw near to that same holiness and live.
