The line literally runs: “Yah is my strength and my song, and He has become my salvation.” Notice the order — God is the strength, God is the song, and only because of that, God is the rescue. The people do not save themselves and then thank Him. He becomes their salvation, and the song follows.

Exodus 15:2 is one of the oldest lines of poetry in the Bible. The word the freed slaves sing here, yeshuah, is the noun that stands behind the name later given to a child in Nazareth: Yeshua, the Hebrew form of the name Jesus, which means “the LORD is salvation.” On the far side of the sea, Israel sang a word that would one day be Someone’s name.

The Song of the Sea is not religious duty; it is the involuntary sound of a body that has been rescued and cannot hold the gratitude in.

He Did Not Give Them Salvation. He Became It.

Slow down on the second line of the song, because everything turns on it: “The LORD is my strength and my song, and He has become my salvation.” Not “the LORD gave me a way out.” Not “the LORD provided an escape route I then took.” He has become my salvation. The rescue is not a thing God handed over from a distance. The rescue is God Himself, drawn so close that He is now the safety the people are standing in. This matters because of what these people had just learned at the water. When the army came, Moses had told them: “The LORD will fight for you; you need only to be still.” They did nothing to earn the open sea. They could not have parted it, could not have outrun the chariots, could not have built a bridge. Salvation came toward them while they stood still and afraid. So when they sing, they do not sing about their own courage at the crossing. There was none to sing about. They sing about Him. And here is the quiet seam in the song that the rest of the Bible will pull on for two thousand years: the Hebrew word they sing for salvation — yeshuah — is the very word that becomes a name. Yeshua. Jesus. “The LORD is salvation” stops being only a sentence about God and becomes the name of God-with-us. At the Red Sea, the people sang the word. At Bethlehem, the Word took the name. The shore was rehearsing something it did not yet fully understand.

When God has rescued you, what is the first thing you reach for — the explanation, or the song?

1. Name one deliverance in your life you have only ever analyzed and never actually thanked God for out loud. What would it cost you to sing it instead?
2. The song says “He has become my salvation,” not “He helped me save myself.” Where are you still narrating a rescue as your own achievement?
3. Miriam picked up a tambourine and led the women in answering the song (Exodus 15:20-21). Who in your life would you have to invite in if your gratitude became something sung rather than something private?

TAKEAWAY

Before the day is over, name one rescue out loud — out of slavery, out of an addiction, out of a marriage that should have ended worse, out of a night you did not think you would survive — and instead of explaining how it happened, simply thank the One who did it. If you have a song, sing it. Make the sound.
