shakhan: to settle down, abide, dwell, take up residence; to tabernacle

God does not say I will visit them, or I will watch over them from above. He says I will dwell – I will move in, set up, and stay in the middle of the camp. The Maker of heaven and earth asks for a tent so He can live on the same ground as a band of former slaves.

From this one root grows the whole vocabulary of God’s nearness. The noun mishkan – tabernacle – is literally a dwelling-place, a place where God shakhans. Later Jewish writers coined shekhinah from the same root to name the visible glory that settled on the tent. And when John writes that the Word became flesh and dwelt among us (John 1:14), the Greek verb he reaches for – eskenosen, He tented, He tabernacled – is the Septuagint’s own word for shakhan.

The materials of the tabernacle are not the goal. They are how a presence gets an address. God wanted nearness, and nearness needed a place.

A Tent in the Middle, Not a Throne Above

There is a detail here easy to miss because it is so quiet. God does not ask for a fortress on a hilltop or a tower that scrapes the sky. He asks for a tent – a structure that can be packed up and carried, that moves when the people move, that sits not above the camp but in the middle of it. When Israel later pitched their camp, the tribes arranged themselves on four sides around the tabernacle, with the tent of God’s presence at the center. Wherever the cloud went, they went. Wherever they stopped, God stopped with them. This was a God on the move with a people on the move. He did not summon them up a mountain to find Him; He came down and set up in the middle of the dust and the noise and the daily life. This is the surprising shape of holiness in Exodus. We might expect the Holy One to require distance – the higher and farther, the safer. Instead the holiness comes near. The same God whose glory made Sinai unapproachable chooses to camp at arm’s reach. Set-apart, yes. But set apart in order to come close.

Where have you been picturing God as distant – on a mountain you have to climb – when He is asking instead to dwell in the middle of your actual, unfinished life?

1. God asked only for what hearts freely moved them to give. What would it look like to offer God something today not out of duty, but because your heart compels it?
2. The tabernacle was built from the center out, beginning with the place of His presence. If you built your day from the center out, what would sit at the center?
3. John says Christ tabernacled among us. Where do you most need to know that God is near – not above your life, but in the middle of it – this week?

Today, name one ordinary place where you live most of your life – a kitchen, a commute, a desk, a waiting room. Before you enter it, say quietly: “God, dwell here with me.” Let that be the sanctuary you offer Him today – not a grand space, but a willing heart in the middle of an ordinary place.
