Rescued First, Then Commanded

”I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery. God’s self-introduction is grammatically personal and emphatic: not a list handed down from a distance, but ‘I myself’ speaking to ‘your God,’ singular, to each one standing at the foot of the mountain.

The Decalogue does not begin ‘Do this’ or ‘Do not do that.’ Its first word is a name: Anokhi – ‘I myself.’ Before a single command arrives, God identifies the One who is speaking and what He has already done. In Jewish tradition the opening ‘I am the LORD your God’ is counted as the first of the Ten Words, not a preface to them – the relationship is the first commandment, and everything else flows from it.

The First Word of the Law Is Grace

The Ten Commandments do not open with a demand but with a deliverance. Law in Scripture is never the road into relationship with God; it is the shape of a relationship He has already begun.

We picture Sinai as the place where God hands down rules – the stone tablets, the finger of God, the long list of shall-nots. So it is worth slowing down to hear how the list actually begins. The first thing God says is not a command. It is a name and a memory: “I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.”

Before there is a single ‘You shall,’ there is a ‘who brought you out.’ The deliverance comes first. Israel is not at Sinai earning their way out of Egypt; they are already out. The sea is behind them. The chains are off. Only then does God say what life with Him looks like. The order matters more than almost anything else in the chapter: rescue, then requirement. Grace, then the shape grace takes.

This reframes the whole law. The commandments are not the terms of a deal – obey and I will save you. They are the household rules of a family already saved. God does not say, ‘Keep these and I will become your God.’ He says, ‘I already am your God, who carried you out of slavery. Here, then, is how a freed people lives.’

The Fence at the Edge of the Cliff

A friend who grew up on a farm told me about the day his father put a fence along the back pasture, where the land dropped off into a ravine. As a boy he resented it. The fence cut off the part of the field with the best view, the place where the wind came up clean from the valley. It felt like a rule invented to spoil things.

Years later he stood at that fence as a grown man and looked down at the drop on the other side – farther and steeper than a child could have judged. The fence was not built to keep him from the view. It was built so he could run that whole field at full speed, in the dark, without ever needing to be afraid of where the edge was. The boundary was not the opposite of freedom. It was what made the freedom safe to use.

That is the strange grace of Exodus 20. The commands draw a line – no other gods, no killing, no stealing, no coveting the life next to yours. They feel, to a certain mood, like fences spoiling the view. But they are drawn by the One who already carried this people out of slavery, marking where the edges are so a freed people can actually live free.

A boundary set by someone who loves you is not the enemy of freedom but its protection. The law is God fencing the edge of the cliff for a people He has just set loose in an open field.

They Begged for a Go-Between

Read past the commands to what the people do once the voice stops. The end of the chapter is easy to skip, but it carries the whole weight of what just happened. The crowd witnesses the thunder and lightning, the ram’s horn, the mountain wrapped in smoke – and they tremble and back away. They cannot bear it. So they turn to Moses with a desperate request: “Speak to us yourself and we will listen. But do not let God speak to us, or we will die.” This is one of the most honest moments in the Old Testament. Standing in the unfiltered presence of the holy God, the people do not feel privileged. They feel they will not survive it. And their instinct is exactly right. Sinful people cannot stand in the raw presence of a holy God and live. So they ask for a mediator – someone to stand between them and God, to receive the word on their behalf and bring it down. God does not rebuke the request. Moses walks alone into the thick darkness where God is, and the people stay at a distance, alive. The structure of grace is already showing: the holy God will speak to His people, but He will do it through one who stands in the gap. The fence around the mountain and the man in the darkness say the same thing – holiness is real, and so is God’s intent to be known by people who could not otherwise survive it.

HISTORICAL CONTEXT

Exodus 20 sits at the founding of Israel as a covenant people. They have been out of Egypt only weeks. The book of Hebrews later looks back on this exact scene – the blazing fire, the darkness, the trumpet, the people who begged that no further word be spoken to them – and uses it to measure the distance the gospel has closed (Hebrews 12:18-21).

The people’s plea at Sinai becomes a pattern God honors permanently. In Deuteronomy 18:15-18, Moses recalls this very moment – the day the people said ‘let us not hear the voice of the LORD again, or we will die’ – and God answers by promising a future Prophet ‘like Moses,’ one who would stand between God and the people and speak God’s words to them. The terror at the foot of the mountain plants the longing the gospel comes to answer.

ANCIENT TRUTH

At Sinai a holy God speaks His law out of fire and thick darkness, and a trembling people beg for a mediator – someone to stand between them and God so they will not die. God honors the request: Moses goes into the darkness, the people live.

The longing born at Sinai runs through the whole of Scripture. Moses recalls the people’s plea and God’s promise of a coming Prophet like him (Deuteronomy 18:15-18). The law-giving and the mediator are bound together from the start: the same God who marks the boundary also provides the One who lets a guilty people approach.

MODERN APPLICATION

We still meet God’s commands the way Israel met the mountain – sensing both their goodness and our distance from them. We keep them imperfectly; we feel the gap between the standard and our lives. The good news of Sinai is that the gap was never meant to be crossed by our performance. It was always meant to be crossed by a mediator.

NEW TESTAMENT ECHO

Hebrews sets the two mountains side by side. “You have not come to a mountain that can be touched and that is burning with fire… so terrifying was the sight that Moses said, ‘I am trembling with fear.’ Instead, you have come to Mount Zion… to Jesus the mediator of a new covenant” (Hebrews 12:18-24). The Mediator the people begged for at Sinai has come. Christ keeps the law we could not keep, and stands in the gap we could not cross, so that the voice which once meant ‘we will die’ now says ‘you may draw near.’

Lord, You did not begin with a demand. You began by telling me who You are and what You have done – that You brought us out, that the chains are already off. Forgive me for treating Your commands as a bill I must pay to keep Your love, when they were always the shape of a love already given. I cannot stand on the mountain in my own strength; I would not survive it. Thank You for the Mediator the trembling people begged for – for Christ, who kept the law I break and stands in the gap I could not cross. Let me live today as a freed person inside Your good boundaries, not a slave trying to earn his way out. Amen.

When the people trembled and begged not to hear God’s voice directly, Moses walked alone into the thick darkness where God was, standing between a holy God and a fearful people.
