Chazaq is an ordinary, good word – the same verb God speaks to Joshua, ‘Be strong (chazaq) and courageous’ (Joshua 1:6). The horror of Exodus 9:12 is that the strength that should steady a man toward God is here turned to set him against Him.

Exodus uses three different verbs for the hardening, and the choice matters. Chazaq (to make strong/firm) appears in 9:12; kabed (to make heavy, dull, unresponsive, the root behind ‘glory’) describes a heart grown thick; and qashah (to make hard, stiff) is used in 7:3. Across the plague cycle the text is careful to balance the actors: Pharaoh hardens his own heart (8:15, 8:32, 9:34) before the words ‘the LORD hardened’ first appear as the cause in 9:12. The man who hardens himself meets a God who hardens him further.

God’s hardening is most often pictured not as a force poured in, but as a restraint withdrawn – the terrible mercy removed that had kept a stubborn will from arriving at its own destination.

Hardened So That - Read the Purpose Clause

The hardest verses come attached to a reason, and the reason changes everything. “I have raised you up for this very purpose, that I might display My power to you, and that My name might be proclaimed in all the earth” (9:16). And again: “that I may perform these miraculous signs of Mine among them, and that you may tell your children and grandchildren … so that all of you may know that I am the LORD” (10:1-2). The hardening is not God taking pleasure in a man’s ruin. It is bent toward revelation. A softer Pharaoh, who let Israel go after the second plague, would have produced a quieter exodus and a smaller knowledge of God. The resistance that God strengthened became the dark backdrop against which His name blazed – to Egypt, to Israel, and to every generation since that has read the story to its children. This is the mystery of judgment in miniature. God’s justice on hard hearts is never merely the end of the matter. It is always, also, a proclamation – the world learning who the LORD is. Even wrath, in Exodus, serves the making-known of His name. The plagues are a sermon written in fire and water and dust, and the text of the sermon is: I am the LORD.
