To eat manna was to eat a question every morning – to be fed by a generosity you could name only by asking about it. Israel never solved the riddle of the bread; they only learned to gather it before the sun grew hot.

The bread is described as white like coriander seed, tasting like wafers made with honey (16:31). For forty years a people walked across a wilderness eating a food whose name was an open question – fed by something they could not explain and could not store.

Daily provision feels like insecurity to a heart trained on stockpiles, but it is the exact condition in which trust is learned – the manna that cannot be hoarded keeps us turning toward the Giver each morning.

When the Sun Grew Hot, It Melted Away

Two details in the chapter do quiet, heavy work. The first: when the people measured the bread by the omer, ‘he who gathered much had no excess, and he who gathered little had no shortfall. Each one gathered as much as he needed to eat’ (16:18). However hard you grasped, you ended the day with exactly enough. The strong could not corner the supply; the weak were not left behind. The bread leveled them all to the same dependence. The second: ‘when the sun grew hot, it melted away’ (16:21). The bread had a deadline. Gather it in the cool of the morning or lose it to the heat of the day. There was no putting it off, no living on yesterday’s gathering. Each morning the wilderness floor was bare again, and each morning, before the heat, it was covered. Put the two together and you have the whole shape of the lesson. God’s provision is impossible to hoard and impossible to outpace. You cannot store enough of Him to coast; you cannot fall so far behind that there is nothing left for you. There is only this: go out in the morning, gather what is given, and trust that tomorrow the ground will not be bare. It is the most exposed way to live – and, it turns out, the safest.

Where in your life are you trying to store up enough security that you will not have to depend on God tomorrow – and what would it look like to gather only today’s portion and trust Him for the morning?

1. Israel’s hunger turned their memory of slavery golden (‘we sat by pots of meat’). What hard place are you tempted to romanticize because the wilderness in front of you feels worse?
2. The manna could not be hoarded and could not be outrun. Which is harder for you to believe – that you cannot store enough of God to coast, or that you cannot fall so far behind that there is nothing left for you?
3. When you pray ‘give us this day our daily bread,’ do you mean it the way Israel had to – or do you secretly want six months in the bank so you never have to ask again?

Today, name one place where you have been demanding tomorrow’s security before you will trust God. Gather only today’s portion – take the next right step for this day alone – and deliberately leave the rest of the week in His hands. Before the sun grows hot, pray ‘give us this day our daily bread,’ and mean it.
