The Greek verb is anazopyrein. It comes from the word for embers — live coals under ash. Paul is not telling Timothy to start a fire. He is telling him to stop letting one go out.
2 Timothy 1:5-7
Opening
For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands. For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self-control.

Written to a young man who was frightened. Notice the tense of the second phrase — not which was given, but which is.
Most of us read this verse as a command to try harder, and then feel worse.
But look at what Paul actually says about the gift. In Greek it is four words: ho estin en soi. Which is in you. Present tense. Not which was given to you once. Not which I hope is still there. Is.
Before Paul asks Timothy to do anything, he tells him what is already true. The thing is present. It is in the room. Whatever has gone wrong, it is not that the fire left.
And then the verb. Anazopyrein. It is built on the word for embers — coals still alive under a layer of ash, which is exactly what a banked fire looks like when you think it has died.
So the instruction is not strike a match. It is closer to: get down there and breathe on what is still burning.
That distinction changes what today asks of you. If you have to produce a fire, then a cold season means you have failed and the task is enormous. If a fire is already lit and low, then a cold season means the ash got thick, and the task is small and physical and near at hand.
One of those you can do this morning. The other one nobody can do at all.
It is worth noticing who Paul is not writing to. This is not a letter to someone who has walked away, or who is in open rebellion, or who has renounced anything.
Timothy is still at his post. He is still doing the work. From the outside nothing looks wrong at all.
That is the condition this verse addresses — not collapse, but quiet. The person still turning up, still believed by everyone around them to be fine, who knows privately that something has thinned out. Paul writes to that man, and his first word about it is not a rebuke. It is a reminder.
If you are that person this morning, you have been correctly identified, and you are not in trouble.

Lord, I have been trying to start something that You say is already in me. Show me what is still burning under the ash, and give me the nerve to get close enough to breathe on it. Amen.

The verse immediately before the one about fanning into flame. Paul traces the fire back two generations before he asks Timothy to tend it.
Before the word, the person.
Timothy is young. He is leading in Ephesus, which was not an easy assignment. His father was Greek and his mother was Jewish, which in that world meant he did not fully belong in either room. And Paul, who is writing from confinement and does not expect to get out, keeps circling back to one thing: do not be afraid.
God has not given us a spirit of fear. Do not be ashamed of the testimony. Join with me in suffering. Guard what was entrusted to you.
You do not say that four times to a man who is doing fine.
Something in Timothy had gone quiet. Not, apparently, his belief — Paul says the faith is sincere and he is convinced it is there. What had gone quiet was his nerve.
And notice how Paul locates that faith. He traces it backwards, through two women. It first dwelt in Lois. Then in Eunice. Then in you.
That is an unusual thing to open a letter with. Paul is about to ask Timothy to do something difficult, and the first move he makes is to remind him that what he is being asked to tend was not his idea. It came from a grandmother and a mother. It arrived secondhand.
So when Paul says fan into flame the gift that is in you, he has already established whose fire it originally was. Timothy did not light it. Two women did, or God did through them. Timothy's whole assignment is not to originate anything. It is to not let it go out on his watch.
There is one more phrase in verse six that is easy to skim: which is in you through the laying on of my hands.
At some point, in a room, an older man put his hands on a younger one and prayed. That was the moment Paul points back to. Not a private experience Timothy had alone. A physical act, done by somebody else, in front of witnesses.
Which is consistent with everything else in these two verses. The faith came through a grandmother. The gift came through a pair of hands. Nothing in Timothy's spiritual life originated with Timothy.
We tend to treat that as a lesser kind of faith — inherited, secondhand, received through other people rather than discovered for ourselves. Paul treats it as the normal kind. He does not apologise for it or tell Timothy he needs a firsthand version. He just tells him what to do with what he was handed.
Nobody is being asked to start a fire. The whole instruction is: stop letting one go out.
Now the verb itself, because everything turns on it.
Anazopyrein appears one time in the entire New Testament. First, the root. Thayer derives the verb from zopyron, the noun for embers — the live coals you find when you rake back the ash on a fire you assumed was dead. The word is built on the idea of remaining heat.
Second, how the Greek Old Testament uses it. In Genesis 45:27, Jacob is told his son Joseph is alive, and the text says his spirit revived. That is this verb. Jacob was not dead. He was old and grief-flattened, and something in him came back up. What revived had been there the whole time, underneath.
Third, and strongest, the sentence Paul actually wrote. He does not say fan into flame a gift. He says the gift of God which is in you. Present indicative. The existence of the fire is not something we are inferring from a verb — Paul states it outright in the same breath.
The prefix has some give in it. Ana- can mean again, which gives you rekindle. It can also be intensive, which gives you something nearer keep at full blaze. Commentators go both ways.
Stand back and look at what that means. One reading says the fire is low and must come back up. The other says the fire is burning and must not be allowed to drop. There is no third reading.
Every road out of this word starts at a fire that is already lit.
It helps to know what fanning a fire actually involves, because the metaphor is not decorative.
You do not fan a fire from a distance or from a comfortable position. You get low. Your face goes near the ash, close enough that it stings. You blow steadily rather than hard, because a violent gust scatters the coals and puts out the thing you are trying to save.
And critically, you are not adding heat. Your breath is cooler than the ember. What you are adding is oxygen — you are giving the fire access to something it needs and cannot reach on its own.
That is a strangely accurate picture of what the ordinary means of grace do. Reading, prayer, communion, showing up with other people on a day you do not feel like it. None of those manufacture warmth. They put you near the coal and give it air.
Which also explains why they so often feel like they are not working. You are not supposed to feel yourself generating anything. You are not generating anything.
One word, used once, in a letter dictated from a cell by a man who did not expect to leave it. It has been sitting in that verse saying the same thing ever since, and nobody has been able to make it mean start.
Consider what Paul is not saying, in a letter he knows is close to his last.
He does not tell Timothy to pray harder. He does not send him a technique. He does not tell him to feel differently about any of it, which is the instruction most of us would have written.
He tells a frightened man that something is in him, and to get near it.
That is a strange thing to write from a cell. It assumes the fire is more durable than the circumstances of either of them — more durable than Paul's chains, than Timothy's nerve, than whatever is coming next for both.
And the fire upon the altar shall be burning in it; it shall not be put out… The fire shall ever be burning upon the altar; it shall never go out.

The Old Testament half of today. Israel had one altar fire, and it was never lit a second time.
Then and Now
ANCIENT TRUTH
The altar fire in Israel was lit once. From then on the instruction was not to relight it but to keep it. Wood went on every morning. It burned through every night. It was never permitted to go out.
Israel had no such category. There was no ceremony for relighting the altar, because the altar was never supposed to reach that state.
MODERN APPLICATION
We think of spiritual life in terms of ignition events — a conference, a crisis, a decision, a moment we can date. So when the feeling fades, we go looking for another ignition.
NEW TESTAMENT ECHO
Which is exactly the assumption behind Paul’s verb. He does not tell Timothy to get it lit again. He tells him to fan what is there.
There is something in the Hebrew of Leviticus 6:13 that most translations cannot carry.
The phrase is esh tamid tuqad. Fire, continually, burning. But tuqad is not a simple active verb. It is in a form Hebrew grammarians call the Hophal, which is causative and passive at once. It does not say the fire burns. It says the fire is caused to be kept burning.
Which means someone has to be doing the causing.
That single verb stem holds this whole week together. The fire is not a self-sustaining miracle that requires nothing. It is also not something anyone lights. It is something kept — by people, in a rhythm, indefinitely, and the grammar encodes the human role without ever suggesting the human started it.
Tamid can mean regular, at appointed times — the daily offering called the tamid was made twice a day.
Here it means something stronger, and the text says so itself. It adds lo tikbeh: it shall not go out. That is not a schedule. That is a state.
And hold on to that verb, tikbeh, from the root kabah. We will meet it again on Friday, in a temple at night, and again at the very end of the week in a promise that uses the same word. The command and the promise turn out to be built from the same three letters.
Think about what this looked like as a job.
Every morning a priest carried wood to the altar and laid it on. Not once a week. Not when he felt moved. Every morning, before anything else happened, in the dark, whether or not it was his idea of a meaningful day.
Nothing about that is dramatic. There is no story in it. Nobody wrote down the name of the man who did it on an ordinary Tuesday in a year nothing happened.
But the fire that had been burning since it was first given depended entirely on somebody doing that unremarkable thing, over and over, for generations. The moment it became optional it would have been a matter of days.
If you have been waiting for your spiritual life to become interesting again before you resume it, this is the correction. It was never interesting. It was wood, in the dark, every morning.
The Fire That Went Out When She Was Finally Safe
On Monday we left Isabella at nine years old, still saying the Lord’s Prayer in Low Dutch as her mother had taught her.
She kept praying for years. Through the beatings. Through being sold again. Her prayers turned into bargaining — promises made at night and broken by morning — but she kept praying, because she had been told to ask God for help when she was in trouble, and she was always in trouble.
Then she was freed. She came to the Van Wageners’, a decent household, and the trouble stopped.
And that is when her faith went out.
The narrative says it plainly: she was so happy and satisfied, that God was entirely forgotten. And then it asks the question that should stop anyone reading this. Why should her thoughts turn to him, who was only known to her as a help in trouble?
Read that again. Not persecution. Not suffering. Not doubt. Comfort.
Every version of this story you will hear in a sermon gets it backwards, because we expect faith to be extinguished by hardship. Hers survived hardship for years. What put it out was safety.
It came back, and the way it came back is worth telling.
Some months later, at a festival she knew by its Dutch name, she was walking toward her old master’s wagon, intending to go back with him. She did not reach it. She said that God revealed himself to her with all the suddenness of a flash of lightning, showing her in the twinkling of an eye that he was all over — that there was no place where God was not.
Her recorded reaction is not a theological statement. It is four words, and they sound like a person genuinely startled.
Oh, God, I did not know you were so big.
The narrative gives no year for this. Scholars date it to 1827; the text itself does not say. What it does say is that the God she had been taught to reach for in trouble turned out to be considerably larger than a help in trouble — and that this was the discovery that brought the fire back.
A fire inherited, carried through the worst conditions imaginable, and then quietly lost once there was nothing left to ask for.
Whose Words Those Are
One thing has to be said about that account, because this week is about a fire handed from one person to another, and it applies to the record itself. Sojourner Truth could not read or write. The book those lines come from was dictated to Olive Gilbert and published in 1850, written in the third person, in Gilbert’s English. Truth sold it herself at her lectures for the next thirty-three years, so it is her authorized account. That is a real claim. It is a slightly weaker one than saying these are her words. The most quotable line in the whole book — that her inward spark perished like a flame just igniting — is Gilbert’s image, not Truth’s. It is worth knowing which is which. Her name was Isabella through everything described here. She took the name Sojourner Truth in 1843, long after.

Isabella’s faith survived being sold and went out when she was comfortable. Which of those two conditions are you in right now?
Do This With Your Hands
Today’s is physical, and it takes about a minute. The point is to let your body make the argument instead of your head.
This week is named for a Greek word that appears once in the Bible.
Paul wrote it to somebody young and frightened, whose faith had come to him through his grandmother and his mother, and who was in a hard season with a job too big for him. And the word Paul chose was not a word for starting. It was a word for reviving. Built on embers.
So if you came into this week thinking you needed to get your fire back, hear the correction. You are not being asked to get anything back. You are being asked to believe it is in you — present tense, Paul's own grammar — and to get close enough to do something about the ash.
That is all today is. Not a bigger effort. A smaller and much nearer one.
Tomorrow we stop talking about tending altogether, and go to the fire as something else entirely.
Before that, one practical question, because this is the middle of the week and the middle is where things get decided.
What is your ash actually made of?
For some people it is genuine grief, and the fire went quiet because grief takes everything. For some it is overwork, and there has been no oxygen for years. For some it is a specific injury from a specific person in a church, still unaddressed. For some it is comfort, which is the one nobody suspects, and which put out a fire that slavery could not.
Those are different problems and they need different responses. Grief needs time and company. Overwork needs something removed. An injury needs to be named to somebody. Comfort needs an honest look at whether you have quietly stopped needing God for anything.
What none of them needs is a bigger effort applied generally. That is the mistake that has exhausted more people than it has helped. Ash is specific. Find out what yours is made of before you start blowing.
And if you cannot tell, that is worth saying out loud to one other person this week. Most of us cannot see our own ash. Other people usually can.

God who does not light the same fire twice,
You put something in me and You have not taken it out. I have spent seasons behaving as though You had.
Thank You for the people it came through — the ones who taught me before I could evaluate it, who prayed for me when I did not ask, some of whom I never properly thanked.
Where comfort has done what suffering could not, and quietly put me to sleep, wake me. Where there is ash, give me the nerve to get down close to it.
And let me stop asking for a new fire when You have never stopped keeping the one You gave.
