Five days about a fire you did not light. Today we put them together, and then ask the only question left: what does a person carrying that do about anybody else?

Opening
You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a basket. Instead, they set it on a stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house.

Note who does what. In this whole saying the lamp never acts. It is lit, it is set down, it gives light. Nobody lights their own.
There is one small thing in this saying that carries the whole week.
Jesus does not say: light your lamp and put it on a stand. He describes what people do. They light a lamp. They set it on a stand. The lamp is the object throughout — acted on, moved, positioned.
And then he says: you are that lamp.
So the instruction is not to generate light. It is not to burn brighter. It is about placement. A lamp that has been lit gets put somewhere, and the one thing nobody does with it is cover it up.
That is a strangely low bar, and it is deliberate. After five days of covenant and altar fire and oil made by hand, the closing instruction is not heroic. It is: do not hide.
Which most of us do, and usually for a reason that sounds like humility. I am not in a place to say anything. My own faith is thin right now. Who am I to talk about this when it has gone quiet in me.
That instinct is understandable and it is also the basket.

The Week in One Shape
Monday — the fire was already burning. The first word of the Bible has covenant on the outside and fire in the middle, and a medieval midrash counted those letters centuries before we did. And John opens his Gospel with the same three words as Genesis, to say the Word is a Person. Rekindling your relationship with God and getting back into Scripture were never two jobs.
Tuesday — it was sworn while you slept. Two parties cut a covenant by walking between divided animals. In Genesis 15 a deep sleep falls on Abram and only God walks, carrying a firepot and a torch. Hebrews says plainly that He swore by Himself. The seed grows while the farmer sleeps and he knows not how. John Newton kept captaining slave ships for six years after the storm he counted as his turning, and the promise held anyway.
Wednesday — rekindling is not ignition. The word this week is named for appears once in the New Testament. It is built on the noun for embers. And Paul removes all doubt by describing the gift as one which is in you — present tense. Israel's altar fire was never lit twice; the Hebrew verb even encodes the human role, saying it is caused to be kept burning. Isabella's faith survived being sold at nine and went out when she was finally safe.
Thursday — you are a lamb before you are a keeper. Two lambs a day, morning and evening, so that God could stay rather than visit. And a charcoal fire on a beach, where the man who had failed at a charcoal fire was given breakfast and then a job, in that order.
Friday — the lamp goes low, and He speaks anyway. All ten of them fell asleep; oil was the difference, and oil is made slowly by hand, in advance, by people whose names nobody wrote down. The lamp of God had not yet gone out on the night a voice said Samuel's name. And Monica prayed seventeen years, was refused what she asked, and was answered at the hinge of what she wanted.
If you take one thing from the week, take this.
There is a Hebrew verb, kabah. It means to go out, of a fire or a lamp.
It is the verb in the command over the altar: it shall never go out.
It is the verb in the temple at night: it had not yet gone out.
And it is the verb in Isaiah's promise about the servant: a smoking wick he will not quench.
The Greek Old Testament translates it with the same word that appears in the mouths of the five women at midnight — our lamps are going out.
Lay them in a row. It shall not go out — the command. It had not yet gone out — the night God spoke a boy's name. They are going out — five women at midnight. He will not quench it — the promise.
Four states of one verb. The last word on it is His.
Arise, shine; for thy light is come, and the glory of the LORD is risen upon thee.

Two commands and a reason. The reason comes last, and it is not about the state of the person being addressed.
Which brings us to the last thing, and it is where the week has been going since Monday.
We began with five words: we love because He first loved us. That is an order of operations, not a sentiment. His move, then ours.
And it extends outward. Because He loved first, you can love first. Because He lit yours, you can light somebody else's — and a flame that crosses from one wick to another is not diminished on the wick it came from.
This matters for the specific question some of you are carrying. What am I supposed to do about the people around me who are not walking with God? There is a way of asking that turns into a project, where the person becomes an outcome and you become an operator.
The week says something different. You are not the source. You did not light yours. The outcome is not yours to produce. Christians differ about how much of the work is ours — some traditions press proclamation hard, others press presence — but none of them makes you the one who does the lighting. You did not light your own.
What is left is smaller and much harder. Be lit, be placed, do not hide. Love first, the way it was done to you, without requiring the outcome.
And if you are somewhere you genuinely cannot say the name — a classroom, a workplace, a family table where it would cost more than it bought — that is not a disqualification. A lamp on a stand is not making an argument. It gives light to everyone in the house.
Closing Prayer
Father,
You went first. In creation, in the covenant, in the fire I did not light and the faith that reached me through somebody else.
Take the basket off. Where I have called my hiding humility, name it. Where I have made a person into a project, forgive me and give them back to me as a person.
And let me love first this week, in one specific direction, without needing to see what it produces.
