Ten women waited for a delayed bridegroom and every single one of them fell asleep. Sleep is not what separated them. Something else did.
1 Samuel 3:1-10
Opening
…they all became drowsy and fell asleep… “Give us some of your oil,” said the foolish ones, “for our lamps are going out.”

Read the first line again. All ten. The wise ones sleep too. Whatever separates them, it is not staying awake.
Ten women are waiting for a wedding party. The bridegroom is delayed. Time passes, and every one of them falls asleep.
That detail is usually skipped, and skipping it inverts the parable.
We tend to hear this story as a warning about vigilance. Stay awake, stay ready, do not drift. But the text is explicit and it will not support that reading. They all became drowsy and fell asleep. The wise ones are not distinguished by alertness. They are asleep in the same room as everybody else.
So the difference is not attention. It is what they brought.
Five had oil. Five did not. And the crisis, when it comes at midnight, is not that they overslept. It is that some of them are holding lights that are failing.
The Greek in verse eight is precise about the timing. Our lamps are going out. Not have gone out. Present tense, in the middle of happening. They are still lit at that moment, and dying.
That is a very specific condition, and it may be exactly where you are. Not gone. Going.
If so, this is the day of the week for you, because everything in it is about that state — and not one of the texts treats it as a disqualification.

Is your lamp out, or going out? Be honest about which — they need different things.
A Two-Minute Prayer
Lord, mine is going out and I have been pretending otherwise. I am not asking You to make me feel something. I am asking for oil. Amen.
IN YOUR OWN WORDS
And ere the lamp of God went out in the temple of the LORD, where the ark of God was, and Samuel was laid down to sleep;

וְנֵר אֱלֹהִים טֶרֶם יִכְבֶּה
The narrator tells you the time of night by telling you how much light is left. It is nearly none.
First Samuel chapter three begins with a sentence that sets the whole scene, and it is bleak. The word of the LORD was rare in those days; there was no widespread vision.
That is the condition. Not persecution. Not crisis. Just a long stretch where nothing much seemed to be coming through, and people had stopped expecting it to.
Then the narrator does something quietly devastating. He tells you what time of night it is by telling you about a lamp.
The lamp of God had not yet gone out.
It is a clock. The lamp burned from evening until morning, so saying it had not yet gone out tells you the night is nearly finished.
And having told you the hour, the sentence keeps sitting there. In an era when God seemed to have stopped speaking, in a building where the light was almost done, with a boy asleep on the floor and an old priest whose eyes were failing — that is the moment a voice says a name.
Not at the start of the night. At the end of it. When there was very little left.
And notice something about the verb. Not yet gone out is terem yikbeh, from kabah. It is the same verb as the command over the altar in Leviticus: it shall never go out. The command and the near-miss are built from the same three letters. Whoever wrote this knew exactly how close it was.
And thou shalt command the children of Israel, that they bring thee pure oil olive beaten for the light, to cause the lamp to burn always.

Where the oil came from. Note who is commanded, and note that the verb is bring — the fuel arrives from outside the sanctuary.
So the parable turns on oil. It is worth knowing what oil actually was.
The instruction in Exodus is for pure beaten olive oil. Beaten is doing real work in that phrase. The first and finest oil was not pressed under a great stone wheel. It was produced by crushing the olives by hand and letting the first, clearest oil run out. It was slow, it was laborious, and it yielded very little.
That oil went into the lamp in the sanctuary.
Now look at who is commanded. Not the priests. The children of Israel. Ordinary households were told to bring it, and the verb is bring to you — the fuel comes from outside and is carried in.
So there is a division of labour here that most sermons flatten. The tending was priestly. Aaron and his sons kept the lamp in order from evening to morning. But the oil was congregational. The flame in the holy place burned on olives that ordinary families had crushed by hand in their own courtyards and carried in.
Which means the light in the sanctuary was never self-sustaining, and it was never one man's job either. It ran on the unglamorous labour of people whose names are not recorded, doing something difficult and repetitive at home, so that a lamp they mostly could not see would keep burning.
Hold that against the parable. When the five ask to borrow oil, the answer they get is no. This is not the sort of thing that can be handed over at midnight. It is made slowly, in advance, by hand.
What that means practically is worth naming. The habits that sustain you in a hard season are almost never built during it.
Here is what that looks like in practice.
Oil is not intensity. It is not a resolve made at midnight to be more serious. Whatever it is for you, it is small, repeatable and boring, and it is done on days when nothing is wrong.
A few minutes with a passage on an ordinary Tuesday. One person who knows the actual state of things and asks. A rhythm of showing up somewhere before you need it to hold you.
None of that feels like much while you are doing it. That is the nature of the thing. Nobody crushing olives by hand in a courtyard felt they were doing something significant, and the lamp in the holy place burned on exactly that.
And if you are reading this at midnight, out of oil: this is not for tonight. It is for the far side of it, when you start making the boring thing again.
Then and Now
ANCIENT TRUTH
Oil was a household product. It took time, hands and repetition, and you made it long before you needed it.
The five who ran out were not lazy at midnight. They were unprepared in daylight, weeks earlier, when it did not feel urgent.
MODERN APPLICATION
We are used to acquiring what we need at the moment we need it. Almost nothing in modern life has to be prepared months ahead, so we have lost the instinct for it.

Which is why the answer they get is not cruelty. Some things genuinely cannot be lent.
Seventeen Years, and the Answer Was No
In the fourth century a woman named Monica had a son who was brilliant, charming, and going badly wrong. He had joined a movement she considered a heresy. He was living with a woman he would not marry. He had a child. She had been praying for him since he was sixteen — something like seventeen years by the end of it.
At one point, worn down, she cornered a bishop and begged him to argue her son out of it. He refused. She kept at him, weeping, until finally — irritated to the point of disgust, in her son’s own account — he told her to go away, and said the line everyone quotes: it is not possible that the son of these tears should perish.
Most retellings leave out that the sentence began with go away from me. It was a brush-off from a man trying to get a persistent woman out of his study. She took it as though it were a voice from heaven.
Years later her son planned to sail from Carthage to Rome. She refused to let him go alone. So he lied — told her he was seeing a friend off — and sailed at night while she was praying at a shrine by the harbour.
She woke to find him gone. Her son records what she did next, and it is not noble. She accused him of perfidy and cruelty. Then she went home.
Her plan had failed completely. And Rome is what carried him to Milan, and Milan is where Ambrose was, and Milan is where it finally broke.
Writing it down decades later, Augustine puts it like this:
“But Thou, mysteriously counselling and hearing the real purpose of her desire, granted not what she then asked, in order to make me what she was ever asking.”
The refusal was the mechanism. The thing she asked for that night was denied so the thing she had asked for all her life could arrive.
The Word Underneath That Sentence
The Latin has an image neither English translation keeps. Augustine writes that God heard the cardinem desiderii eius — the hinge of her desire. Cardo is a hinge, the pin a door swings on. So the picture is not that God heard the gist of what she wanted. It is that he heard the thing everything else was swinging on, and answered that, while ignoring the sentence coming out of her mouth. Augustine never gives the bishop a name. He calls him a certain bishop and leaves him there — a man whose one recorded sentence outlived everything else about him.
HISTORICAL CONTEXT
Augustine, Confessions III.xii.21 and V.viii.15, translated by J. G. Pilkington, 1886. Monica died at Ostia in her fifty-sixth year, roughly five months after his baptism at Easter 387.
There is one more thing about Monica, and it is the part that belongs to this week.
When her son finally told her he had left the movement she had prayed him out of for years, she did not celebrate.
Augustine records it with some surprise. She was not overjoyed, as at something unexpected. Her heart was shaken with no tumultuous exultation.
She had wanted this for the better part of two decades. She got it, and she declined to treat it as the answer — because it was not the thing she had actually asked for. She had asked for a Christian son, and what she had in front of her was a man who had stopped being a heretic. That is not the same, and she would not accept partial delivery.
That is a hard model and it needs handling carefully, because there is a version of it that is just ingratitude.
But set it against the parable and it clarifies. The women with oil were the ones who took the delay seriously — who assumed the wait might be long and prepared accordingly. Monica had the same instinct. She had been at this seventeen years. She was not going to be talked into stopping by an improvement.
If you are waiting on something enormous — a person, a healing, a marriage, a child, a return — this is the day for it. The answer may be no. It may be wait. Both of those have been the answer to people who prayed better than either of us.
What this text will not let you conclude is that a low lamp means you were not heard. The lamp in the temple was nearly out on the night God spoke a boy's name.
One last note on Monica, because it stops her being a plaster saint.
Augustine does not present her as one. He records that she opposed his marriage partly because a wife might hinder his career. He records that as a girl she used to sip wine in secret, and stopped only when a servant called her a drunk to her face.
She was persistent and she was also a real person with mixed motives, which is the only kind of person who has ever prayed for anybody.

What have you been asking for so long that you have quietly stopped expecting it?

The word of the LORD was rare in those days. The lamp had not yet gone out. A boy was asleep on the floor and an old man's eyes had grown dim.
And a voice said a name.
That is where this day lands. Not in a promise that your lamp will flare up tomorrow. In the observation that the God of Scripture has a documented habit of speaking at the end of the night rather than the beginning, to people who were asleep at the time, in buildings where the light was nearly finished.
All ten of them fell asleep. Every one. The wise ones too.
What separated them was not vigilance. It was oil — made slowly, in advance, by ordinary hands, and carried in from outside.
Tomorrow we gather the week. And then, on Sunday, we stop.
Closing Prayer
God who speaks at the end of the night,
My lamp is going out and I have been too proud to say so plainly. I have been performing a fullness I do not have.
You did not wake Samuel at the beginning of the evening. You waited until there was almost nothing left, and then You said his name.
For the thing I have asked for so long that I have stopped expecting it — I am asking again tonight. And if the answer is no, or wait, teach me what Monica knew: that You hear the hinge of what I want and not only the words.
Give me oil. Not feelings. Oil.

Her son does not present her as a saint — he records that she opposed his marriage partly for his career, and that as a girl she had a secret drinking habit.
One thing there was for which I desired to linger for a while in this life, that I might see thee a Catholic Christian before I died.
