Twice a day, every day, a lamb was brought to the fire that never went out. Yesterday we talked about keeping it. Today we come as something else entirely.
Exodus 29:38-42
Opening
He shall feed his flock like a shepherd: he shall gather the lambs with his arm, and carry them in his bosom, and shall gently lead those that are with young.
Isaiah 40:11 (KJV)
Written to people in exile who had been carrying themselves for a long time. Note that the lambs do not walk in this verse.
Isaiah is writing to people who have lost almost everything. Their city is gone. Their temple is gone. They are a long way from home and there is no obvious route back.
And the image he gives them is not an army or a rescue. It is a shepherd carrying lambs against his chest.
Notice what the lambs contribute. Nothing. They are gathered with his arm. They are carried in his bosom. The verse contains no instruction for them at all — no keeping up, no walking faster, no trying. The only active party is the one doing the carrying.
This week has been full of things you might reasonably be asked to do. Fan the flame. Tend the fire. Add the wood. That is real, and yesterday was about it.
Today is a deliberate correction to it.
Because there is a specific way that tending language goes wrong in a person. You start as someone being carried and you end up as staff. You take responsibility for the fire, then for other people's fires, and somewhere in there you stop being someone who receives anything. You become the one who makes sure. And people in that condition burn out in a way that looks, from outside, exactly like faithfulness.
So before we say another word about keeping the flame: you are a lamb. That is the first and load-bearing fact. Everything else you are asked to do sits on top of it and cannot replace it.
It is worth being concrete about how this actually happens to people, because it rarely announces itself.
It starts well. Somebody notices you are reliable and asks you to help. You help, and it goes fine, so they ask again. Over a few years the asking becomes assumed, and the assuming becomes an identity, and one day you realise you have not gone to a service as a participant in a very long time. You go as staff. You are scanning the room.
Nothing in that sequence is a sin. Every individual step is a decent person saying yes to a real need. That is precisely why it is hard to catch.
The tell is not exhaustion, because plenty of good work is exhausting. The tell is that you stop expecting anything for yourself. You can articulate exactly what God is doing in the people you serve and go blank when asked what he is doing in you.
Isaiah's picture is aimed straight at that condition. The lambs are gathered with his arm. Not deployed. Not consulted. Carried.
If that sounds like a demotion, notice how much of your tiredness is actually the cost of refusing it.

When did you stop coming to God as someone who needs carrying, and start coming as someone with responsibilities?
A Two-Minute Prayer
Shepherd, I have been carrying things I was never issued. Let me be gathered today rather than useful. Amen.
IN YOUR OWN WORDS
Now this is that which thou shalt offer upon the altar; two lambs of the first year day by day continually. The one lamb thou shalt offer in the morning; and the other lamb thou shalt offer at even… This shall be a continual burnt offering throughout your generations.

The rhythm that ran underneath Israel’s entire life. Morning and evening, for as long as there was an altar.
Here is what Israel actually did.
Every single morning, a lamb. Every single evening, another one. Not on festival days only. Not when the nation felt devout. Two lambs a day, at the altar whose fire never went out, for as long as there was a nation to bring them.
Do the arithmetic and it becomes almost absurd. Thousands upon thousands of animals across the generations, and the instruction is explicit that it continues throughout your generations. Nobody was ever going to finish this.
That unfinishability is the point, and it cuts two ways.
One way is heavy. The writer of Hebrews will later observe that a sacrifice repeated forever is a sacrifice that never actually settled anything. If it had worked, it would have stopped.
The other way is gentler and easier to miss. The rhythm meant that approaching God was never an event you had to work yourself up to. It was already scheduled. Twice a day, whatever had happened, whatever you had done, whatever you felt — the fire was lit and something was being brought.
A person who had a catastrophic week did not have to arrange access. It was morning. There was a lamb.
And that is worth holding if your own relationship with God has become episodic — intense for a while, then absent, then guiltily intense again. Israel's pattern was not intensity. It was twice a day, forever, at the same fire.
There is a phrase attached to this instruction that is easy to walk past, and it changes what the whole arrangement was for.
God says the reason for it is so that he may dwell among them. Not so that they may be forgiven and then leave. So that he may stay.
The daily lamb was not a fee for access. It was the maintenance of an address.
That reframes the rhythm entirely. Twice a day was not twice a day of paying. It was twice a day of somebody continuing to live where they said they would live. The offering kept the arrangement current the way a shared meal keeps a household real — not because the food purchases anything, but because people who eat together twice a day are people who live together.
Which is worth putting beside your own patchy prayer life. The question underneath the guilt is usually whether God has left. He has not, and the rhythm was never what kept him.
A person who had a catastrophic week did not have to arrange access. It was morning. There was a lamb.
Now move forward a very long way, to a charcoal fire on a beach before dawn.
Peter is there. Weeks earlier he had stood beside a different charcoal fire in a courtyard and denied three times that he knew the man now cooking his breakfast. He had gone back to fishing. Whatever he had been before, he plainly did not consider himself that any more.
And Jesus does not open with the denial. He opens with food, and then a question, and then an instruction.
Feed my lambs.
Sit with how strange that ordering is. The man has failed publicly and catastrophically at the one thing he most loudly promised. The reasonable next step is a probation period. What he gets instead is a job, immediately, and the job is to look after lambs.
Two things are happening at once, and this is the hinge of the whole day.
Peter is being restored — treated as a lamb himself, fed on a beach, spoken to gently by somebody who knew exactly what he had done. And in the same breath he is handed responsibility for others.
So which is he? Lamb or shepherd?
Both. Permanently. The New Testament never lets anyone graduate out of being carried. Peter, decades later, writes to churches and calls himself a fellow elder and a witness — and then tells them to cast all their anxiety on God, which is not a thing a person says who has stopped needing it.
There is one more thing in the exchange that is easy to miss in English.
Jesus asks Peter a question three times, and three times gives him an instruction. But the instructions are not identical. The first is about lambs. The next two are about sheep.
Whatever else is going on there, the sequence starts small. Before Peter is given the flock, he is given the young ones — the ones who cannot fend for themselves, who have to be fed rather than led.
And that is the right order for anyone coming back from a failure. Not straight to the weight of the whole thing. Something small, and something that involves feeding rather than directing.
If you are returning to something you dropped, look for the lambs first. The sheep can wait a while.
Notice what is missing from the conversation.
There is no accounting. Jesus does not walk him back through the courtyard, does not ask what he was thinking, does not require him to explain himself or promise better. The denial is never named out loud by either of them.
What replaces the accounting is a question about love, asked three times, and food.
That is a strange way to handle a betrayal, and it is the pattern of the whole week. The response to failure is not an audit. It is breakfast, and then work.
When they had finished eating, Jesus asked Simon Peter, ”Simon son of John, do you love Me more than these?” “Yes, Lord,” he answered, “You know I love You.” Jesus replied, ”Feed My lambs.”

Spoken over a charcoal fire, to the man who had last stood at a charcoal fire denying he knew him. John uses the same rare word for both fires.
Then and Now
ANCIENT TRUTH
In the sacrificial system the worshipper brought the animal but did not become the animal. There was always something between them and the fire, and it was provided rather than achieved.
Every worshipper in Israel knew that what made them acceptable at the altar was not their own state that morning. It was standing there.
MODERN APPLICATION
We have largely lost that. With no ritual to carry it, the burden of being acceptable to God quietly transfers onto our own performance — how consistently we pray, how much we serve, how convincingly we feel.
NEW TESTAMENT ECHO
Which is why John points at Jesus and says: behold the Lamb of God. The thing that goes between you and the fire is still provided, and it is still not you.
There is a detail in C. S. Lewis's story that almost nobody mentions, and it belongs here.
Lewis's mother died when he was nine. He had prayed for her recovery, and he is unsparing about the kind of praying it was — he approached God, in his own words, without love, without awe, and merely as a magician. When she died he concluded it proved nothing either way. What went with her, he said, was all settled happiness, all that was tranquil and reliable.
A few years later at school he simply stopped believing. His own account of when is almost funny in its vagueness: he ceased to be a Christian, and the chronology of this disaster, he wrote, is a little vague.
He stayed an atheist through university, the trenches, and his first years teaching at Oxford. Then, by his own dating, in the Trinity Term of 1929, he gave in.
Except that scholars now think he got the date wrong. Alister McGrath argues for 1930, on the evidence of letters that show no sign of the change until months later. And here is the part worth the whole story: the scholars who agree Lewis misdated it cannot agree with each other about the right answer.
So the most articulate Christian writer of the last century could not reliably say when his own fire came back. He gave a date, repeated it for thirty years, and appears to have been wrong.
If you cannot point to the moment yours went out, or the moment it started coming back, you are in unembarrassing company. The lamb does not need to know what day it was picked up.
He prayed for his mother's healing as a nine-year-old and she died. By his own account he approached God without love and without awe, merely as a magician.
That is worth sitting with if your own fire went out somewhere near an unanswered prayer. A God approached as a mechanism, and then quietly filed away as unreliable, was never quite a relationship — and losing it may be nearer a beginning than an ending, at a date nobody will be able to fix.
The Charcoal Fire, Twice
John is a careful writer, and he does something in his last chapter that only shows up in the Greek.
There is an uncommon word for a charcoal fire. John uses it exactly twice in his Gospel.
The first is in the high priest’s courtyard. It is cold, the servants have made a fire, and Peter is standing there warming himself when he is asked whether he is one of them. He says he is not. He says it three times.
The second is on the beach. Morning, after the resurrection, and there is a charcoal fire with fish on it and bread, and Jesus is cooking.
Same word. Same smell, presumably. Peter walks up out of the water and there it is again — the exact sensory setting of the worst night of his life, recreated on a shore.
And nothing bad happens. He is given breakfast.
Then, three times, a question. Do you love me. Three denials, three askings. Peter is upset by the third, and it is hard to read that as anything other than a man realising he is being walked back through it deliberately, and not to be punished.
The fire he failed at is the fire he is fed at. It is the same fire, and it was not taken away from him.
Certain of the Thing, Vague About the Day
Lewis never wavered about the change. He described it at length and called himself the most dejected and reluctant convert in all England. He was in no doubt that it had happened to him. He simply could not say when. He gave a date, kept giving it for thirty years, and was almost certainly wrong. Those two things sit together without strain. Most people who have been loved for a long time cannot name the day it started, and none of them doubt they are loved.

Is there a place you failed badly enough that you have quietly stopped going back to it? What would it mean for that to be the exact place you are fed?
Learn Three Words
Today’s is memory work, and it is deliberately tiny. Three words, not a verse.
Two lambs a day, at the fire that never went out, for as long as there was a nation. Nobody ever finished it and nobody was meant to.
And then a charcoal fire on a beach, and a man who had failed at exactly that setting, given breakfast and a job in the same conversation.
You are both things this week. You are being asked to tend something — that was yesterday, and it stands. But underneath it, permanently, you are the one being carried, gathered with his arm, fed at the fire you failed at.
If you can only hold one of those tomorrow morning, hold the second one.
Tomorrow is the honest day. Lamps going out, a boy asleep in a temple where the light is nearly done, ten people who all fell asleep waiting, and a woman who prayed for seventeen years and did not get the answer she asked for.
It is the one most likely to be about you.

Shepherd of Israel,
I have made myself staff. Somewhere along the way I stopped arriving with empty hands and started arriving with a report.
You gather lambs with Your arm. You carry them. They do not walk and You do not ask them to.
Meet me at the fire I failed at. Not to go over it again — You have never needed to — but to feed me there, and then to hand me back the work when I can hold it.
And where I have been serving out of an emptiness I will not admit to, stop me before it costs somebody else.
Amen.
