to stir up, disturb, trouble; to bring calamity upon

To akhar a thing is to ruin it for everyone, the way one drop of dye clouds a whole cup of water. Achan’s private theft did not stay private; it muddied the entire nation’s standing before God.

The whole chapter turns on a play on this root. The man is Achan (Akan); the valley where the trouble ends is Achor (Akhor); and the verb that Joshua throws at him in verse 25 – “Why have you brought this trouble (akhar) upon us?” – is the same sound. The narrator is making the name and the deed rhyme: the troubler troubles the camp, and the place keeps the memory in its name.

Hidden sin is structural, not cosmetic. It bears weight silently until the load it cannot carry arrives – and then the failure looks sudden to everyone who could not see the crack.

The exposure does not happen with thunder. God could have named Achan directly; instead He has Israel come near tribe by tribe, clan by clan, family by family, man by man – a slow narrowing through a long morning until only one man is left standing. By the time the lot falls on Achan, he has had every hour to step forward and has not. And then comes the line that turns the whole grim scene tender. Joshua does not say, “You are caught.” He says, “My son, give glory to the LORD, the God of Israel, and make a confession to Him.” My son. To the man whose hidden cloak just cost thirty-six lives, Joshua speaks the word a father uses. And he frames the confession not as defeat but as worship: to tell the truth now is to give God the glory. Hiding the sin had been a lie about God – that He could not see, that He did not matter enough to obey. Confessing it, even here, even now, hands God back the truth He is owed. This is the deepest current under the surface of a brutal story. Confession is not God dragging information out of us. It is the one move left by which a guilty person can still glorify God – by agreeing with Him about what is true.

Name one thing you have been keeping buried – to God, and then, if it touches someone else, to that person. Confession out loud is the spade that gets it out of the ground. Do not let it stay private one more day under the belief that hidden means harmless.
