Ruth’s vow in verses 16-17 is chesed spoken out loud. She owes Naomi nothing – no husband ties them now, no law compels her, her own people and gods are a day’s walk back. She binds herself anyway, by oath, for life and past it: “if anything but death separates you and me.”

Naomi uses the word first, in verse 8, when she sends her daughters-in-law away: “May the LORD show you loving devotion, as you have shown to your dead and to me.” She names chesed even as she releases them – and then Ruth becomes the answer to Naomi’s own blessing. The whole book of Ruth is a small, true story acting out what chesed looks like when a person lives it all the way to the end.

A Moabite Chooses the God of Israel

Listen to what Ruth actually swears. “Your people will be my people, and your God will be my God.” In two short clauses a Moabite woman crosses every line her birth set for her. Moab was the nation that hired Balaam to curse Israel and seduced them at Peor (Numbers 22-25); Deuteronomy 23 names Moabites as those kept at a distance from the assembly. Ruth knows what she is and where she comes from. She binds herself to Naomi’s people and to Naomi’s God anyway – and she seals it with an oath in the LORD’s own name, the covenant name, the very God Naomi is at that moment accusing of dealing bitterly with her. That is the hinge of the whole chapter, and it is easy to miss because it is so quiet. Naomi has just said God’s hand has gone out against her. The reasonable response to a God who empties you is to walk back to gods who promise full barns. Orpah does the reasonable thing. Ruth does the faithful one. She chooses the God who has, by every visible measure, given her nothing but graves – and she chooses Him by binding herself to one of His grieving, emptied-out people. The writer drops one detail at the very end of the chapter, almost in passing: they reached Bethlehem at the beginning of the barley harvest. Naomi came back empty, and she walked into a town where the grain was just coming in. The God she accused of emptying her was already setting a harvest in motion – and standing beside her, unnoticed, was the loyal love through whom He would do it.

Where in your life are you being offered an honorable off-ramp – a reasonable, even loving reason to stop showing up for someone – and what would it mean to cling instead?

1. Naomi was honest with God before she was comforted by Him: “the Almighty has dealt quite bitterly with me.” Is there a grief you have been managing instead of naming? What would it look like to say it plainly?
2. Ruth bound herself to the God of Israel by binding herself to one of His people. Who has carried you toward God simply by refusing to leave?
3. Whose ‘barley harvest’ might you be standing beside right now, unnoticed – a person whose empty hands God could fill partly through you?

TAKEAWAY

Name one person in a hard season who has stopped being convenient to love. This week, show up for them once with no agenda – a visit, a task, a presence that asks nothing back. Let that be your small act of chesed.
