When the LORD says He sees the levav, He is not claiming to read moods. He is claiming to know the deciding center of a person – the part we keep behind our managed surface – and to make His choices from there.

The verse turns on a single verb used twice: ra’ah, to see. Man ra’ah’s the eyes; the LORD ra’ah’s the levav. The same act of seeing reaches two different depths. We stop at the surface our eyes can reach. God’s seeing goes all the way down to the center a person cannot hide.

Our seeing stops at the file, the surface, the obvious candidate. God’s seeing goes to the person nobody thought to call in from the field.

Tending the Sheep

Read verse 11 slowly, because everything hangs on a small phrase. When Samuel asks if all the sons are present, Jesse answers, “There is still the youngest, but he is tending the sheep.” That little word but is the whole of human seeing in a single syllable. There is one more, but – but he is only the youngest, but he is only a shepherd, but he is hardly worth interrupting dinner for. God hears it differently. The detail Jesse offers as a reason to overlook David is the detail Scripture will return to again and again as the heart of who he is. He was keeping the sheep. The future king of Israel is, at this moment, doing the lowest, most invisible job in the household – the job you give to the one who matters least – and doing it faithfully when no prophet, no father, no audience is watching. That is the levav God has been seeing all along. Not the polish of the seven brothers in the house, but the faithfulness of the one boy in the field. Here is the quiet weight of it: God did not choose David in spite of the sheep. The years alone with the flock, fending off the lion and the bear, learning to carry creatures who cannot carry themselves – that field was the training ground God had been watching the entire time the family wrote the boy off. The shepherd was being shaped into a shepherd-king in the one place no one thought to look.
