Israel is seven years into a slow ruin. Midian sweeps in at every harvest like locusts, stripping the fields, leaving nothing. So a young man named Gideon is doing his threshing in the wrong place. Wheat is meant to be beaten out on a high, open floor where the wind can carry off the chaff. Gideon is doing it down in a winepress – a sunken stone pit cut for crushing grapes – because the walls hide him from the raiders. Picture the labor of it: no breeze, no room, swinging a flail in a hole in the ground, glancing up between strokes. This is a portrait of a frightened man trying to keep a little for himself in a country that has lost its nerve.

Into that pit the angel of the LORD comes and sits down under the oak, unhurried. And the first word out of heaven is not a rebuke for hiding. It is a title: “The LORD is with you, O mighty man of valor.” Gideon hears the irony before he hears the promise. He answers with the question everyone in Israel has been swallowing for seven years: if the LORD is with us, why has all this happened? Where are the wonders our fathers told us about? It is an honest complaint, the kind faith makes when the evidence has run thin.

God does not argue the history. He turns – the text says “The LORD turned to him” – and gives a command instead of an explanation: “Go in the strength you have and save Israel from the hand of Midian. Am I not sending you?” Notice the strange arithmetic. Gideon is told to go in the strength he has, and the strength he has is almost nothing. The whole weight of the sending rests not on the size of his arm but on the last four words: Am I not sending you?

A friend of mine ran the floor of a small print shop for years – good with the machines, useless, in his own estimate, with anything that smelled like leadership. When the owner died suddenly and the will named him manager, his first instinct was to find the paperwork that proved it was a mistake. He kept a copy of the letter in his shirt pocket and pulled it out a dozen times a day. Not to read the part that said he was in charge. To check that his name was really on it.

He told me, much later, that he didn’t run that shop on confidence. He ran it on the letter. Every morning he was sure he wasn’t enough, and every morning the letter said someone with more sense than him had sent him anyway. The strength wasn’t in him. It was in the signature.

Gideon asks God for a sign in the very next breath – “give me a sign that it is You speaking with me” (v. 17) – and he will ask twice more before the chapter ends. This is not the story of a hero who needed no convincing. It is the story of a man who kept reaching into his pocket for the letter, and a God patient enough to keep showing him the signature.

The fifth judge of Israel, from the clan of Abiezer in the tribe of Manasseh, called during seven years of Midianite raids. Gideon meets every commission with a question – he argues with the angel, asks for a sign, lays out a fleece twice – and is sent anyway. God deliberately reduces his army from thirty-two thousand to three hundred so that the deliverance can belong to no one but the LORD. Generations later he is remembered not for his hesitation but for his faith, named in Hebrews 11 among those who ‘gained strength from weakness.’
