The same verb returns to indict Saul: because he rejected (ma’as) the word of the LORD, the LORD has rejected (ma’as) him as king (1 Samuel 15:23, 26). The king they chose to escape rejection becomes the next thing rejected. Ma’as is a hall of mirrors until grace breaks it.

In verse 7 the LORD uses ma’as twice in a single breath: “it is not you they have rejected (ma’as), but they have rejected (ma’as) Me as their king.” The doubling is the wound. Samuel feels personally spurned, and God gently moves the rejection up the chain to where it actually lands – on Himself.

Israel is not deceived into wanting a king; they are warned in detail and want one anyway. The ache to hand our weight to a visible ruler is older than any one bad decision – and the ruler always takes more than we offered.

God Says Yes to the Thing That Will Cost Them

Read the chapter again and notice the most unsettling line. After the rejection, after Samuel’s careful warning about all a king will take – sons for chariots, daughters for kitchens, a tenth of the harvest, and finally “you yourselves will become his slaves” – the people still refuse to listen. And God says: “Listen to their voice. Appoint a king for them.” He gives them what they ask. This is not God losing the argument. It is something far more sobering: God handing a people the very thing He has just told them will wound them, because they have set their hearts on it. The judgment is not lightning. The judgment is the king. Hosea will later put words to it – “So in My anger I gave you a king, and in My wrath I took him away” (Hosea 13:11). Sometimes the most frightening answer God gives is yes. And yet even here mercy is at work. Notice that God does not abandon them to the monarchy and walk off. He warns them first, in detail, sparing nothing. Then He stays in the story – choosing, correcting, and eventually raising up a king after His own heart, and from that line a King who would never take but only give. The yes that looks like surrender is, in the long view, God refusing to stop working even through the thing His people chose against Him.

3. Have you ever been clearly warned about something that would cost you, and chosen it anyway? What was the ache underneath the choice?

Today, name one “king” you have crowned – a person, a metric, an approval – and consciously hand that throne back to God. When you feel the pull to seek that king’s verdict, pause and pray one line: “You are my King; I will wait for You.”
