go’el; a kinsman, a redeemer; the relative obligated to recover and restore what a family has lost

The go’el did not redeem strangers. He redeemed his own. That is the scandal and the comfort of the word: redemption begins by claiming someone as family.

The women of Bethlehem do not call the baby a blessing or a comfort. They call him a go’el – a redeemer. The same word God claims for Himself again and again: “I am the LORD your Redeemer” (Isaiah 49:26). The book of Ruth lets you watch the word work at human scale – a field bought, a widow taken in, a name kept alive – before the prophets lift it up to the size of God.

The Women Get the Last Word

The Name in the Margin

Ruth is the person history forgets – foreign, female, widowed, poor. The Bible writes her name into the line of the king and, through the king, into the line of Christ. Inclusion is not God overlooking who she was. It is God refusing to.

The Genealogy Is the Gospel

A modern reader is tempted to skip the last five verses of Ruth. A list of fathers and sons – Perez, Hezron, Ram, Amminadab, Nahshon, Salmon, Boaz, Obed, Jesse, David – reads like a phone book bolted onto a love story. But to the people who first received this book, the genealogy is not the appendix. It is the point. Here is what the list quietly does. It takes the small, provincial, easily-forgotten events of one grieving family in one small town and connects them, name by name, to the throne of Israel. It says: this was never only about Naomi’s grief or Ruth’s loyalty or Boaz’s kindness. God was assembling a king out of a famine and a funeral and a foreigner’s faithfulness, and not one of them could see it while it was happening. The redemption felt local. It was dynastic. The bitterness was real on the ground. The writing-in was happening in heaven. And the list does not stop at David. The same names appear again in Matthew chapter 1, where the line runs on past David – through the kings, through the exile, through more obscure couplings and unlikely mothers – until it arrives at a different birth in the same little town. “A son has been born to Naomi” in Bethlehem becomes, in time, a Son born to all of us in Bethlehem. The book that began “in the days when the judges ruled” turns out to be a road. Follow the names far enough and you arrive at Christ. That is the secret hidden in the genealogy: God redeems by including, and every name He writes in is bending the story toward the Redeemer.

Where in your life have you been living like a line in the margin – present but unsure you are really counted, really wanted, really written in?

1. Naomi could not see the redemption while she was inside the grief. Look back at a bitter season you have lived through – can you see now any name God was quietly writing in that you could not read at the time?
2. Ruth’s inclusion cost a redeemer something – a field bought, a name taken on. What does it change to know your place was not overlooked into existence, but redeemed into it?
3. If your name is written in the Lamb’s Book of Life, what fear or striving could you set down this Sabbath?

TAKEAWAY

This is a Sabbath day – nothing to finish, nothing to earn. Sit for a few quiet minutes with the women’s words over Naomi: “Blessed be the LORD, who has not left you this day without a kinsman-redeemer.” Then say your own name in that sentence. Let it be enough that, in Christ, your name is written in – and rest there.
