In verse 28 the wordplay turns final: Hannah says she will “dedicate” the boy to the LORD – the Hebrew there reuses sha’al, so it reads almost “he is the one asked-for, now given-back.” The child she begged for becomes the child she lends back. Asking and giving are bound up in the same word.

When Hannah names her son Shemu’el (Samuel), she explains it from this root: “Because I have asked (sha’al) for him from the LORD.” The name does not break down to mean “asked of God” by strict etymology – most scholars read Shemu’el as “heard of God” or “name of God.” Hannah is doing something deeper than spelling: she is hanging the whole meaning of the child on the prayer that he answered. Every time the boy’s name is spoken, it remembers a woman’s request and God’s reply.

Remembered, Then Given Back

Two verbs carry the weight of the chapter. The first is Hannah’s word in her vow: “remember me.” The second is the narrator’s quiet answer after she returns home: “and the LORD remembered her.” In the Hebrew Scriptures, when God “remembers” someone, it is never that He had forgotten and then recalled. To remember is to act – to move on behalf of the one in mind. God remembered Noah and the waters receded. God remembered His covenant and brought Israel out of Egypt. God remembered Hannah, and a barren womb opened. Then comes the turn that makes Hannah extraordinary. The son she begged for, she gives away. In her vow she had already promised it: “then I will dedicate him to the LORD all the days of his life.” The thing she wanted most in the world, she asked for in order to hand back. After Samuel is weaned she carries him to Shiloh and tells Eli, “I prayed for this boy, and since the LORD has granted me what I asked of Him, I now dedicate the boy to the LORD.” This is the heart of the passage, and it is harder than barrenness. Many of us can ask God for what we lack. Fewer of us can hold the gift loosely once it comes. Hannah asks with her whole grief and then opens her hands with her whole will. The asking and the giving-back are the same act of trust, stretched across years.
