The tragedy of Samson is a tragedy of a nazir who treats his consecration as a private muscle rather than a sacred trust. Set apart from the womb, he lived as though the setting-apart were his to spend.

The angel calls the unborn boy a Nazirite to God from the womb until the day of his death (Judges 13:7). Samson never chose the vow; it was laid on him before he drew breath. Of the three Nazirite signs in Numbers 6 – no wine, no contact with the dead, no razor on the head – Samson breaks all three across his life, yet the gift keeps coming anyway. The uncut hair is the last sign left, and even it is finally surrendered on Delilah’s lap.

Strength rarely vanishes in a single dramatic blow. It leaks out through small compromises kept long enough that we no longer feel them – until we reach for God’s gift and find we are alone.

Blind, Bound, and Grinding - Then Grace Again

What the Philistines do to the captured Samson reads like a parable of what sin does to the gifted. They “seized him, gouged out his eyes, and brought him down to Gaza, where he was bound with bronze shackles and forced to grind grain in the prison” (Judges 16:21). The man who would not control his eyes loses them. The man who would not be bound to his vow is bound in bronze. The man who used his strength for sport now turns a grinding wheel like an animal. And then, almost in passing, the narrator drops a single line that holds the whole gospel of the chapter: “However, the hair of his head began to grow back after it had been shaved” (Judges 16:22). It is not a note about hair. It is a note about God. The covenant was broken from Samson’s side, not God’s. The same grace that set him apart in the womb does not abandon him at the millstone. While Samson grinds in the dark, unable to see, the sign of his consecration is quietly returning – because God has not finished with him. The deepest reading of Samson is not “don’t waste your gifts,” true as that is. It is that the God who gives is more faithful than the man who squanders. Grace gets the first word, in an angel’s announcement to a barren woman, and grace gets the last word, in hair that grows back in a prison cell.

1. Where in your life is strength leaking out slowly – through a compromise kept so long you no longer feel it – the way Samson’s secret was talked out of him by daily pressure?
2. Samson ‘did not know that the LORD had departed from him.’ Is there an area where you are still reaching for an old strength out of habit, without checking whether you are walking with God in it?
3. The hair began to grow back in the prison. Where do you most need to believe that God is not finished with you, even now, even here?
