Romans: Justified by Faith — Day 6 — Deeper Dive

Romans opens in a courtroom, and the early chapters do not flatter anyone. Paul lines up the openly wicked, then the smugly moral, then his own people with their law, and brings the gavel down on all of it: ‘all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God’ (Romans 3:23). For two and a half chapters the prisoner’s dock keeps filling until there is no one left standing outside it. The honest reader stops looking for the exception and admits to being in the dock.

Then, in the same breath, the verdict turns. We ‘are justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus’ (Romans 3:24). Freely – the Greek means ‘as a gift, without cause in us.’ Not earned down, not worked off, not negotiated. Given.

By chapter 5 Paul draws the conclusion with one small, heavy word: ‘Therefore.’ ‘Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God.’ Notice he does not say we feel peaceful. He says we have peace – the way a treaty ends a war whether or not the soldiers in the field have heard the news yet. The fighting between us and God is over, declared over from God’s side, at the cost of His Son.

A woman I know spent two years convinced the tax authority was about to ruin her. An early letter had said she owed far more than she could pay, and the fear of it shaped everything – she rationed groceries, dodged the mail, lay awake doing arithmetic that never came out right.

What she did not know was that a second letter had been issued months earlier. An error had been found and reversed. Her balance was zero. The letter sat unopened in a stack she was too afraid to touch, because she assumed every envelope from that office carried bad news.

When a friend finally opened it for her and read it aloud, she did not believe it at first. The debt had been settled the whole time. Her fear had been real; the debt had not. She had been free for months and had lived as though she were ruined, because she never let the verdict reach her ears.

That gap – between what is true of us before God and what we are still bracing for – is the gap Romans 5 closes. The letter has been issued. The account is settled. Faith is simply opening it and believing what it says.

A Pharisee trained under Gamaliel and once a violent opponent of the church, Paul was confronted by the risen Christ on the road to Damascus and spent the rest of his life preaching the gospel he had tried to destroy. He wrote Romans around AD 57 to a church he had not founded, laying out the most sustained case in the New Testament that sinners are justified – declared righteous – through faith in Christ. He, of all people, knew the gap between deserving and receiving.
