Run looking up

Now faith is the assurance of what we hope for and the certainty of what we do not see. … Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off every encumbrance and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with endurance the race set out for us. Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.

Hypomonē is the difference between sprinting and finishing. Hebrews does not ask the tired church to feel more; it asks them to stay – to remain under the promise long enough for Jesus to bring it home.

Hebrews 12:1 tells us to run the race di’ hypomonēs – through endurance. The same word names what the witnesses of chapter 11 had: they kept their feet on a promise they never saw arrive in their lifetime (11:13). Endurance here is faith over time, faith that has learned to wait.

A Roll Call of People Who Died Before the Payoff

Hebrews 11 is not a list of people who got what they wanted. It is a list of people who held onto a promise that outlived them – and were commended not for arriving but for not letting go.

Hebrews 11 is the most famous list in the Bible, and people usually read it like a trophy case. Abel, Enoch, Noah, Abraham, Sarah, Moses, Rahab, and on through judges and prophets – the heroes of faith, each introduced with the same drumbeat: “By faith… by faith… by faith.” We tend to file it under inspiration. Look how much they accomplished.

But read the chapter to its quiet hinge and the picture turns. “All these people died in faith, without having received the things they were promised” (11:13). And again at the end: “These were all commended for their faith, yet they did not receive what was promised” (11:39). The chapter is not a highlight reel of arrivals. It is a long line of people who kept walking toward a horizon they never reached in their lifetime. Abraham obeyed and went “without knowing where he was going” (11:8). They saw the promise “from afar” and welcomed it anyway, calling themselves “strangers and exiles on the earth” (11:13).

That is the real definition the chapter opens with: “Now faith is the assurance of what we hope for and the certainty of what we do not see” (11:1). Faith, in Hebrews, is not certainty about the present. It is conviction about a future you cannot yet touch – holding ground on a word, not a sight.

The Stadium Full of People Who Already Finished

Picture the last lap of a long race. The runner is past pretending it doesn’t hurt – legs heavy, lungs burning, the part where the body starts negotiating with the will. And the stands are full. Not strangers. The stands are full of everyone who ran this same course before, who knows exactly how this lap feels, who finished it.

That is the image Hebrews reaches for the instant chapter 11 ends. “Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses…” (12:1). The whole roll call of the faithful is suddenly relocated into the grandstand. The word for witnesses can mean spectators – but it is also the word for those who testified, who gave evidence with their lives. They are not watching to grade your form. They are proof that the course can be run, because they ran it on the same trembling legs.

But here is the thing about a crowd in the stands: you are not supposed to run staring up at them. A runner who watches the spectators trips. Hebrews names the cloud of witnesses and then, in the very next breath, tells you where to actually put your eyes – and it is not on them.

The faithful dead are the encouragement, not the focus. They prove the race is runnable; they are not the One we run toward.

They Were Waiting for Us - and for Him

One verse breaks the trophy-case reading entirely. After the whole chapter of faith, Hebrews says of those commended heroes: “God had planned something better for us, so that together with us they would be made perfect” (11:40). Read that slowly. Abraham, Moses, the prophets – they were not completed in their own era. They were waiting. Their faith leaned forward into something that had not yet come, something that would only arrive on the far side of the cross. The whole line of the faithful was holding a place in a story that finds its center in Jesus. So when 12:2 says to fix our eyes on Jesus, “the author and perfecter of our faith,” it names Him the one thing every name in chapter 11 was reaching toward. Archēgos – the founder, who goes first and cuts the trail. Teleiōtēs – the perfecter, who finishes what the trail was for. Jesus “for the joy set before Him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God” (12:2). He did not just start the race of faith and cheer us on; He ran it to the bitter end, through the cross, and crossed the line first – so that the staying-power chapter 11 only hoped for could finally be supplied by Him. The heroes are not the point. They are the arrow, and the arrow points at the One who endured the worst lap of all and is now seated, finished, waiting at the line for everyone still running.

HISTORICAL CONTEXT

Hebrews was written to Jewish believers under pressure – some had “endured a great conflict in the face of suffering,” had their property seized, and were now tempted to drift back toward the older, safer familiarity of the synagogue (Hebrews 10:32-39). The faith chapter reminds exhausted people that everyone who ever trusted God had to keep trusting before the payoff arrived.

Hebrews 11 lists Abel first – the Abel whose blood “still speaks” (11:4). Hebrews 12 then closes the unit saying we have come “to the sprinkled blood that speaks a better word than the blood of Abel” (12:24). Abel’s blood cried for justice; Christ’s speaks mercy.

BRIDGE TO CHRIST

ANCIENT TRUTH

A community of worn-out believers, tempted to quit, is told to throw off every weight and “run with endurance the race set out for us,” looking not at the crowd of faithful dead but at Jesus, who endured the cross and is now seated and finished (Hebrews 12:1-2).

Notice that the command is to run with endurance, not to run fast. Hebrews assumes the faithful life is long and the lap is hard. “Consider Him who endured such hostility from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart” (12:3). The remedy for losing heart is not more effort; it is a better gaze.

MODERN APPLICATION

You probably did not stop believing on purpose. Most people don’t. They just get tired – tired of waiting, tired of unanswered prayers, tired of holding a promise that has not arrived. Hebrews does not scold the tired. It tells them to set down what they’re carrying that isn’t theirs to carry, and to stop running with their eyes fixed on other people – their progress, their collapse, their opinion – and put their eyes back on the only One who finished the course.

NEW TESTAMENT ECHO

The whole letter has been building to this: Jesus “after He had provided purification for sins, He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high” (Hebrews 1:3). The seated Christ is the finished Christ. He is not still running. He has crossed the line – which means the One we fix our eyes on is not a fellow contestant but the victor already at rest, drawing us home.

What weight have you been running with that was never yours to carry – and whose face have you been watching instead of His?

Where in your life have you been waiting on a promise that has not arrived, and what would it look like to keep your feet on it the way the faithful in Hebrews 11 did?

Posture: honest-confession

Lord Jesus, I am more tired than I let on. I have been running this race watching the wrong things – other people’s pace, my own failures, the promise that still hasn’t come. Help me set down the weight I was never meant to carry. Lift my eyes off the crowd and off myself and fix them on You – the One who started this faith in me and will finish it, who endured the cross and sat down. Give me endurance, not to perform, but to stay. You ran ahead of me through the worst of it. Bring me home. Amen.

The Cloud of Witnesses

Hebrews 11 gathers them by name and by deed: Abel, who offered a better sacrifice; Enoch, who walked with God; Noah, who built against the unseen; Abraham, who left without a map; Sarah, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph, Moses, Rahab, and a host of judges, kings, and prophets – some who conquered kingdoms, others who were sawn in two and ‘of whom the world was not worthy’ (11:38). They are bound together by one thing: each trusted a promise that did not arrive in their lifetime. Hebrews relocates them into the grandstand of 12:1 not as celebrities but as testimony – living evidence that the long, hard race of faith can in fact be finished.

These were all commended for their faith, yet they did not receive what was promised. God had planned something better for us, so that together with us they would be made perfect.
