The City With No Temple

John has spent his whole life around temples. As a boy in Galilee he would have walked up to Jerusalem for the feasts and seen Herod’s temple gleaming on its hill – the largest building most people of his day would ever stand near, the one place on earth where heaven and earth were said to touch. To a faithful Jew, the temple was the center of the world. It was where God lived.

So when the angel carries John up a great and high mountain and shows him the new Jerusalem coming down out of heaven, his eyes go looking for the temple. They have always gone looking for the temple. And he writes down the strangest thing in the whole vision: “I saw no temple in the city.” The center is missing. The one building that mattered most is simply not there.

Then comes the reason, and it changes everything: “because the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are its temple.” There is no building where God meets His people because there is no longer any distance to bridge. The temple existed to manage a problem – a holy God and an unclean people, kept apart by curtains and courts and a priesthood, allowed near only at arm’s length and by blood. In the city, the problem is gone. God does not live in a room at the heart of the city. God is the heart of the city.

A friend of mine grew up in a house where you learned to read the front door. You could tell from the sound of the key turning what kind of evening it would be. So she spent her childhood listening – bracing, calculating, keeping a clear path to her room. She got very good at being present and somewhere else at the same time.

Years later she married a gentle man, and for a long time she still flinched at the door. The body remembers what the mind has forgiven. She told me the turning point was small: an ordinary Tuesday, dishes in the sink, her husband humming in the next room, and she noticed she was not listening for anything. She was just home. “I think,” she said, “that was the first time a house ever felt safe enough to relax inside.”

That is the difference between a temple and the city. A temple is a place you approach carefully, on the right day, in the right state, watching the curtain. The city John sees is a home you can finally stop bracing inside – because the One you were always trying to get close to, and a little afraid of, has moved in and pulled up a chair, and there is nothing left between you to manage.

Throughout Revelation, Jesus is named the Lamb – the title that ties Him to every Passover lamb and every sacrifice that came before, and to John the Baptist’s cry, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world” (John 1:29). In the final vision the Lamb shares the single throne of God, is the city’s temple, and is its lamp. The slain Lamb is why an unclean people can dwell with a holy God without a veil between them.
