But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be restrained; where there is knowledge, it will be dismissed. … And now these three remain: faith, hope, and love; but the greatest of these is love.

Paul does not praise love as a feeling that lasts a while. He insists it is the single thing in creation that never collapses – and he stakes that claim on a body that came out of a tomb.
We pull 1 Corinthians 13 out for weddings and read it like a poem about tenderness. Paul wrote it as an argument. The Corinthians were proud of their flashier gifts – speaking in tongues, prophecy, deep knowledge – and Paul lines those gifts up and says each one will run out. Prophecies will cease. Tongues will fall silent. Knowledge will be set aside. They are scaffolding, useful for the building going up, taken down once it stands.
Then comes the line: “Love never fails.” Not love is nicer. Love does not collapse. Of all the things the Corinthians prized, only one will still be standing when the others are gone.
Keep reading past chapter 13 and you find out why Paul is so sure. Two chapters later he turns to the resurrection of the dead, and he is just as blunt: “If Christ has not been raised, our preaching is worthless, and so is your faith” (15:14). The same letter that says love outlasts everything also says everything hangs on whether one grave stayed empty. These are not two unrelated topics filed near each other. The love that never falls and the Lord who would not stay down are the same claim, said twice.
What the Widower Read at the Graveside
A man I knew buried his wife after fifty-one years. At the graveside, with the casket still above the open ground, he asked to read something. Everyone expected the love chapter – patient, kind, the wedding words again.
He read chapter 15 instead. “What is sown is perishable; it is raised imperishable. It is sown in dishonor; it is raised in glory. It is sown in weakness; it is raised in power.” Then he stopped and said, quietly, that he had read chapter 13 to her at their wedding, and he was reading chapter 15 to her now, and he had finally understood that they were the same chapter the whole time. The love he promised her in his thirties only made sense, he said, if there was something on the far side of the dirt they were standing on.
He was right, and he had read his Bible better than most of us. Love that ends at the funeral is a beautiful thing that fails. Love that does not fail needs a doorway out of the grave, or it is just a kind word over a hole in the ground.
The love of chapter 13 only keeps its promise – that it never fails – because of the resurrection of chapter 15. Take the empty tomb away and even the truest love is buried with its object.
Read the List Again - It Is a Portrait
Go back over chapter 13 slowly and notice that Paul never defines love with an adjective. He defines it with verbs – things love does and refuses to do. “Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no account of wrongs.” Then, two verses later: “It bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.” Now set that list next to one Man. Patient with disciples who never quite understood. Not self-seeking – “the Son of Man came not to be served, but to serve.” Keeping no account of wrongs – “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.” Bearing all things, enduring all things, all the way to a cross. Every clause in the love chapter reads like a description of Jesus written before the Gospels were collected. Paul is not handing the Corinthians an ideal to admire. He is handing them a face. And here is where chapter 13 reaches forward to chapter 15. The reason this love “endures all things” and “never fails” is that the One who lived it was buried on a Friday and would not stay buried. Love endured all things – including death – and walked back out. That is why Paul can say it never falls. It already went down into the one place everything falls, and it got up.
HISTORICAL CONTEXT
Corinth was a Roman colony rebuilt in 44 BC, a port city famous for commerce, status-seeking, and rival philosophical claims about the afterlife. Many Corinthians, shaped by Greek thinking, found the idea of a bodily resurrection embarrassing – the soul might survive, but who would want the body back? Paul writes chapter 15 straight into that resistance, insisting the resurrection is not a metaphor for the soul’s survival but a physical event: a body sown perishable, raised imperishable.
Chapter 15 contains what scholars widely regard as the oldest summary of the gospel in the New Testament – “that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, that He was buried, that He was raised on the third day” (15:3-4). Paul calls it something “I received” and “passed on,” a fixed formula already being recited by Christians within a few years of the crucifixion, before a single Gospel was written down.

Paul tells a status-hungry church that their prized gifts will all run out, and only love will be left standing – because the love he means is the cross-shaped, grave-defeating love of the risen Christ, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep.
Chapter 13 and chapter 15 are held together by a single thread that runs through the whole of Scripture: the love of God is not a feeling that fades but a commitment that outlasts death. “Love is as strong as death,” sings the Song of Songs (8:6); “many waters cannot quench love.” Paul goes one step further – love is not merely as strong as death, it is stronger, because in Christ love walked into death and came back out.
MODERN APPLICATION
We still build our lives on the things Paul said would be taken down – what we know, what we can do, the gifts that make us impressive. When those run out, and they will, the question is whether anything is left holding the structure up. Paul says one thing remains: a love we did not generate and cannot lose, anchored in a Friday grave that came up empty.
NEW TESTAMENT ECHO
Paul’s logic is sealed at the end of chapter 15: “Where, O Death, is your victory? Where, O Death, is your sting? … thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ” (15:55, 57). The love that never fails and the death that lost its sting meet in the same name.

Lord, I have spent so much of my life building on the things You said would be taken down – what I know, what I can do, the parts of me that look impressive to others. I have read Your love chapter at weddings and missed that it was a portrait of You. Teach me to see it: patient, kind, keeping no account of my wrongs, bearing all things, all the way to a cross. And because You did not stay in the grave, let me trust the one thing that never falls. When my own scaffolding comes down, let love be what is left standing. Through Christ, the firstfruits, who turned the funeral into a doorway. Amen.

Letter-Writer to a Divided Church
wrote 1 Corinthians around AD 53-55, from Ephesus
A former persecutor of the church who met the risen Christ on the road to Damascus, Paul writes to a young, gifted, quarreling congregation in Corinth. He had founded the church himself and stayed eighteen months. Now, hearing of their divisions and their pride in spiritual gifts, he writes to reorder their values – placing love above every gift and the resurrection beneath every hope. He claims, in this very letter, to have seen the risen Lord himself.
And now these three remain: faith, hope, and love; but the greatest of these is love.
LESSON FOR US
Paul does not pit love against doctrine or feeling against fact. He grounds the tenderest words in the New Testament on the hardest claim in the New Testament – that a dead man rose. Hold both, as he did, and love stops being fragile.
