The garden, finished

Read the last two chapters of the Bible slowly and you will keep feeling that you have been here before. A river runs through it. A tree of life stands on its banks. God walks with His people in the cool of His own presence. Every image is borrowed from a garden that closed two minutes into the story – Eden, with its river and its tree and its evening walks, sealed off by cherubim and a flaming sword.

John is not inventing pictures. He is collecting them. The river that flowed out of Eden to water the world (Genesis 2:10) flows again here, now “clear as crystal,” pouring from the throne. The tree of life that Adam was barred from touching (Genesis 3:24) is no longer guarded; its leaves are handed out freely “for the healing of the nations.” The curse that fell in the garden – thorns, sweat, separation, death – is lifted by name: “No longer will there be any curse.”

The whole Bible turns out to be one long sentence with a garden at the start and a garden-city at the end. In between lies everything: the flood, the call of Abraham, the long captivity, the kings, the prophets, the manger, the cross, the empty tomb, the slow centuries of the Church. And here, at the close, the thing that was broken in chapter three of Genesis is not patched. It is made new. “Behold, I make all things new,” says the One on the throne – and then, as if knowing how unbelievable it sounds, He adds: “Write this down, for these words are faithful and true.”

A friend who spent fifteen years as a hospice nurse once told me that almost no one, at the very end, asks for more time to finish their projects. What they ask for is people. They want the door open. They want the familiar face in the chair. They want, more than anything, not to be alone in the room.

She said the cruelest part of dying was rarely the pain – pain could usually be managed. It was the leaving. The sense of being slowly pulled away from everyone you love, one goodbye at a time, until the goodbyes are all that is left.

That is exactly the ache Revelation 21 reaches into. “He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and there will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain.” Notice the order. Death comes first, because death is the root of the rest – the great separator, the maker of all the other griefs. And notice the tenderness of the gesture. God does not abolish tears with a decree from a distance. He comes close enough to wipe them, the way you would dry the face of a child. The promise is not mainly that the sad things will stop. It is that the One who stops them will be near enough to touch.

Traditionally identified with the apostle John, he received the visions of Revelation while exiled on the rocky Aegean island of Patmos, likely under Roman pressure near the end of the first century. The same author who opened his Gospel with ‘In the beginning was the Word’ was given the privilege of writing the Bible’s closing scene – the marriage of heaven and earth. He wrote to suffering churches who needed to know how the story ends, and the answer he gave was a Person, not merely a place: the Lamb at the center of everything.
