The One the Whole Crowd Was Watching For

For an entire chapter the writer of Hebrews has been calling the roll. By faith Abel, by faith Enoch, by faith Noah. By faith Abraham went out not knowing where he was going, and lived his whole life in tents in a land that was promised to him but never handed over. By faith Sarah, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph, Moses. By faith Rahab, Gideon, Barak, Samson, David, the prophets. Some conquered kingdoms. Others were sawn in two. It is the longest list of names in the New Testament, and it reads like a victory parade.

Then comes the line that should stop us cold. “These were all commended for their faith, yet they did not receive what was promised.” Every name in the hall died with the promise still out ahead of them. They saw it from a distance, the writer says, and welcomed it, and confessed they were strangers and exiles on the earth. But none of them crossed the line. The parade is a parade of people who finished their lives unfinished.

Why say it that way, at the end of such a glorious chapter? Because the writer is about to tell us something the heroes themselves did not get to see. “God had planned something better for us, so that together with us they would be made perfect.” The faith of every saint in chapter 11 was reaching toward a completion none of them could supply. They were all leaning forward toward a Someone who had not yet stepped onto the field.

Picture a long-distance race in an old stone stadium. The stands are packed. And the runner, halfway through and out of breath, makes the mistake every runner knows: she starts watching the crowd. She looks for faces. She reads the scoreboard. She glances at the runners beside her to see who is gaining. And her legs, following her eyes, begin to drift and slow.

A coach standing at the rail does not tell her to ignore the crowd because it does not matter. He tells her the crowd is not what she is running toward. “Eyes front,” he says. “Find the line. Run to the line.”

That is the turn Hebrews makes between chapter 11 and chapter 12. All those witnesses in the stands — Abraham, Moses, Rahab, the prophets — are real, and they are cheering, and their lives prove the race can be run. But the writer does not say fix your eyes on them. He says they are the cloud you run surrounded by, not the goal you run toward. The eyes come off the crowd, off the runners, even off the race itself, and land on one figure already at the front, already across the line, seated. The whole stadium, living and dead, is finally watching the same Person.

Hebrews has spent eleven chapters naming Him better than angels, than Moses, than the high priests, than the blood of bulls and goats. At the climax of the faith chapter, the writer gives Him a title no one else in Scripture carries in full: archēgos kai teleiōtēs — the author and the perfecter of faith. He is the founder who goes first into ground no one has crossed, and the finisher who carries the whole thing to its appointed goal. Every faithful name in chapter 11 was reaching toward Him without seeing Him; we run looking straight at Him.
