The Only Thing That Walks Out of the Grave

First Corinthians is a hard letter. Paul spends most of it cleaning up a messy church – divisions over which teacher to follow, lawsuits between believers, confusion at the Lord’s Table, a congregation so impressed with its own spiritual gifts that it had begun to come apart over them. It is not the letter you would expect to contain the most beautiful paragraph ever written about love, or the most confident paragraph ever written about resurrection. Yet here they both are, two chapters apart, and they are not two subjects. They are one promise told twice.

Chapter 13 makes a strange claim about love. Paul does not say love is the kindest gift or the warmest gift. He says it is the one that does not fall. Prophecy will cease. Tongues will be stilled. Even knowledge – the thing the Corinthians prized most – will be dismissed, set aside like a child’s first attempts at speech. All of it is partial, Paul says, a dim reflection in a polished-bronze mirror. But love never fails. In a chapter surrounded by things that pass, love is the thing left standing.

Then chapter 15 tells you why. The reason anything survives death is that Someone already has. “Christ has indeed been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep.” The love that never fails in chapter 13 is not an abstract virtue floating above the wreckage. It has a face. It walked out of a tomb on the third day. Love does not fail because Love was raised first.

There is a verse in this passage you have almost certainly heard out loud. “Love is patient, love is kind.” It is read at weddings – in the white dress, the held breath, the whole future still ahead. Two people stand at the front of a room and promise a love that bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things, and everyone present wants to believe it can be done.

The same chapter gets read again, years later, at funerals. The white dress is gone. The future the two people promised has arrived and then run out. And someone stands at a different front of a different room and reads the same words: love never fails.

It is a strange thing to read the same sentence at a wedding and a graveside, and to mean it both times. At one end of a life it sounds like a hope. At the other end it sounds like a defiance. Paul wrote it to do both. He wrote chapter 13 so it could be read over a grave and still be true – because he had already decided to write chapter 15. The love that endures all things endures the last thing, too. It endures death, because the One who is love did.

Once a persecutor of the church, Paul met the risen Christ on the road to Damascus and became His apostle to the nations. Writing to the troubled church at Corinth around the mid-50s AD, he had every reason to lead with rebuke. Instead he hands them the church’s earliest creed – ‘Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, that He was buried, that He was raised on the third day’ (15:3-4) – and the most enduring words ever written on love. He had seen the firstfruits with his own eyes.
