The Witnesses Who Never Got There

Read Hebrews 11 slowly and something strange surfaces. It is called the Hall of Faith, and it reads like a parade of triumph: Noah builds, Abraham goes, Moses chooses, the walls of Jericho fall, the dead are raised. But sitting in the middle of the parade is a verse that should stop you. “All these people died in faith, without having received the things they were promised” (11:13).

They died still waiting. Abraham was promised a land and lived in tents in it as a stranger. He was promised descendants like the stars and held one son of the promise in his arms. The prophets were promised a kingdom and were sawn in two, stoned, left wandering in sheepskins. The writer is honest about this in a way we are often afraid to be: faith, in this chapter, is not the thing that gets you what you want in time. Faith is the thing that lets you die reaching for something you never held, certain it was real.

The word the writer keeps using is pistis – the assurance of what we hope for, the certainty of what we do not see (11:1). Not certainty about what is in your hands. Certainty about what is not yet, and is coming. Then the verse most readers skip: “God had planned something better for us, so that together with us they would be made perfect” (11:40). The witnesses could not finish without us. Their faith and ours were always meant to be completed by the same arrival.

There is an old trade among stonemasons that no one practices anymore, because the buildings it served took longer to raise than a human life. A man would be apprenticed at twelve to carve the base of a column. He would spend forty years on the lower courses of a cathedral he had been told, plainly, he would never see finished. His son might set the windows. His grandson might see the spire go up. He carved anyway, by lamplight, the parts that would be hidden behind later work – because he believed the thing he was building was real, even though the only proof he would ever have was the trust of the man who drew the plans.

We tend to imagine faith as a sprint to a reward we collect. Hebrews 11 imagines it as masonry. You set your stone. You die. The wall is not yet a cathedral. And the strange dignity of the chapter is that God writes the names of the men who only ever saw scaffolding.

The builders were not foolish. They had seen the master’s drawings. They knew what the finished thing would be. They simply trusted it enough to spend a life on a part of it they would not live to admire. That is closer to biblical faith than most of what we call it.

The first man named at length in the Hall of Faith. “By faith Abraham, when called to go to a place he would later receive as his inheritance, obeyed and went, without knowing where he was going” (11:8). He lived his whole life in the land of promise as a foreigner, in tents, and died holding one son and a deed to a burial cave. Hebrews calls him not a failure but a model: he was looking forward to the city with foundations, whose architect and builder is God (11:10).
